I have a 98 Lexus Es 300; in relation to that chart for Lexus medium incomes, divide it by 3.5 and that is about where I am. I guess I need to go back to college for my fifth degree.

OP, I don't think you're going to find an accurate number (unless you break into Toyota's database ) besides know thing it's mostly middle-class citizens driving 4runners.

IMO, material things like cars/trucks do not really signify a persons income level that well at all; and I rarely ever judge based on such things.

Perfect example, I have two friends, one has a good job and is pretty well off, the other is broke and living pay check to pay check. The well off one uses Coach handbags exclusively, whereas the broke one uses Chanel handbags exclusively. (For those of us without wives into these things, Chanel on average costs ~5-10x more, literally)

Now if you saw both out in public which one would you think was making ~5x more money then the other?

So I read the link on the first post from the OP, I couldn't even find the 4Runner on the dang list... maybe I missed it. but what if you have more than one vehicle on the list? is it to be supposed that you should average the averages? I mean assuming we're partnered/coupled/married it's reasonable to assume many of us have more than one car. I will say this and it sort of speaks to income, but not really. People don't buy 4Runners because it's what they can afford, they buy them because they WANT one. I bought a 2007 Hyundai Elantra (in 2007) as an example, not because I wanted one, but because it was the best option for me balanced against my commute and car budget at the time. So arguably a more accurate reflection of my income at the time. Now... well, I could have bought a more or less expensive vehicle but I WANTED my 4Runner, so I got one, I don't know how that translates to income specifically but I do know that if you're buying the car you want, instead of "the only thing you could afford" things have changed.

When I'm not working 40 hour weeks I get almost no spare spending money but I would not sell my truck for anything.

I make a very good living and could buy a "newer" 4Runner or whatever I want. But when my POS 2007 2WD Honda Pilot almost killed me in the NC mountains I came back and bought my 2007 V8 4Runner.

I completely agree with this. Having a nice car does not translate into being rich or "upper class".

On the other hand, 4runners are definitely not on the cheaper side and there are many other alternatives.

It just comes down to A) saving for the vehicle you want if you cannot afford it immediately B) Having the cash flow to do what you want. Neither is wrong in my book

That chart isn’t even close in my area. If I had to guess (judging by all the damn 5th gen 4Runners I seen on the road) median income of a 5th gen owner household would be $50,000-$80,000 where I’m located.

Priorities and good money habits… things to learn about when growing up, and something that is better to figure out sooner than later.

I buy relatively inexpensive (or value oriented) cars because I want to, not because I have to… Perhaps I am just a bit frugal, but if I can find value in something I’ll stick with it instead of spending more to obtain new, elaborate, or expensive things. It’s not that I don’t like luxury goods, but I also don’t need to over extend myself to feel satisfaction or try and keep up appearances. I live within my means, and that balance is important to me. It allows me to save for retirement, plan for financial security, and that comes first for me.

I know people that put too much emphasis on material goods or expensive cars, and are also generally the ones who can’t save and don’t have their personal finances setup correctly. I learn a lot of good stuff networking with people… and really it’s not about how much you make, it’s about how much you can save.

Some of the most well-to-do people I have crossed paths with don’t flaunt with wealth, don’t drive or own flashy things, are also some of the most down to earth people, but are soo well off financially that I am generally awestruck after learning about them.

The Honda wasn't a bad car I bought it when I lived in Florida. But it was a "car" more than truck so I bought a real truck to handle North Carolina.

Give the adult a break… As I mentioned above, priorities, learning, & opportunity cost. Some just figure it out sooner, some do it later, and some never really get it.

To a degree it almost sounds like tough love lol. If I had a mentor or two to point out waste and help identify/seize opportunity, I might have been even better off today.

I pissed away enough time and cash doing things in my youth in the name of hobbies and fun… I generally spent a lot of time educating myself though hobbies, but it came at a cost, which was not working as hard as I should have been to grow my business. The real growth happens when you can actually understand what the cost was.

Loaded question about the income though.
1 person may have just 1 car equalling x-amount of dollars, while another person may have several, plus some other offroad and water toys. It's all subjective.

Yes, very true… but the real question is how much do you need to put away so you don’t have to take a job greeting people at the front door of a Walmart when you are 60 years old.
