Broke the plastic tab off my stock plastic oil filter housing during the last oil change. Figured the metal one would be a more durable option but now it’s leaking. Before mounting the new one I took a file to the small mould-lines that go right down the middle of the part but maybe I didn’t file enough... thought about using a small application of black RTV along the mating surface to make up for the less than perfect finish. Have y’all had this issue / do you recommend going back to the plastic housing or is there a fix that you recommend?

You DID install the rubber sealing O-ring it (should have) come with didn't you...?

... o-ring also has to be installed in the correct location. What brand of oil filter housing did you install? A genuine Toyota part or Dorman? Did you look for 'casting lines' in the groove for the o-ring? Did you install a genuine Toyota oil filter and o-ring? Where did you buy the oil filter housing, and oil filter?
Dorman is the lowest quality oil filter housing one can buy. A few years ago, I inspected two after market oil filters and decided to never install one in my 4Runner.

It’s the doorman, didn’t realize Toyota sells one. I don’t remember looking for the casting lines there I only remember noticing and filing them down at the bottom of the threads on that mating surface.
The filter and ring are purolater, not Toyota.
Ya it definitely seemed very low quality once I saw it in person...
Ya I lightly coated the o-ring before putting it on. The leak is of a pretty considerable quantity. After about 400 miles it’s started to leak out from above the primary skid plate and sling back towards the exhaust and fuel tank skid plate

Amazon sells a genuine Toyota oil filter housing. I buy oil filters from the dealer because oil filters advertised as genuine on Amazon might be counterfeit. Dealer oil filter price is reasonable.
Believe it or not, many people in the t4r community have had this issue when swapping to the metal housing.
I know people who have done the swap will probably quote me saying 'well I've never had an issue' but this is a common occurance. I've also heard of it happening in the Audi/VW community on other vehicles.
I'm not sure if it's just an O ring issue or if the metal just doesn't seal as well as the plastic housing.

Plastic threads or metal threads on the oil filter housing do NOT seal against leakage. Oil filter housing does NOT have a flat washer to provide sealing like a drain plug. O-ring does the sealing.

I don't know the brand of metal oil filter housing, but I have seen about 3 or 4 of them now leaking on customer's cars.
They just have "Made in China" stamped on main housing and a torque spec on the filter drain plug and you can tell the quality is shit, grind marks all over the casting. The thing I noticed with all of the ones that leaked was that the O-Ring groove was too deep, the O-Ring barely stuck out of the groove and caused a leak.
I really should have mic'd the factory vs. the non-factory ring groove depths for my own curiosity. If I see another one I'll post pictures and measurements so you guys can steer clear of that type/brand.

I would recommend this tool by Assenmacher and to use the plastic housing. It does not require a lot of torque seal up the housing.
