Micro rust spots on tailgate- anyone else?

Hi Gang,

While giving my 2012 Trail Edition a good look-over I discovered what appears to be a dozen or so micro-sized (smaller than a pin head) spots of rust. At first I thought that they might be metallic dust from brake pads, but they are not on the paint; they are IN the paint.

Generally stated, these rust specs appear to be in close proximity to the 4Runner logo. This is a garage kept vehicle that I have paint sealed twice each year- and I keep it immaculate. My other vehicle is a seven year old Wrangler Sahara that doesn't have a spot of rust on it. Go figure.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, how did you addresses it beyond the obvious (detail and waxing)?

Frustrated in MI!

Have you tried a clay bar? If so, and it didn't work because the deposits are embedded, try some Iron-X.

I have these on the back of mine. I've fixed 3 of the larger ones my sanding out the rust and filling with touch up paint. I have 3 or so more to do as well. They almost look like stone chips.

Take it to the dealer and have it fixed under warranty. Its obviously not a rock chip and the factory paint warranty should apply to it.

Its apparently a common problem on the 5th gens.
