Mileage estimate seems to have fallen drastically, is this normal?

When I first picked up the 4Runner I noticed that with a full tank of dealer gas the estimated mileage was something like 412 miles. Now at around 1400 miles when I fill her up I get something like an estimated 350-360 miles. Whats up with that? Do I not understand the way the computer computes? :keyboard:

as always thanks for your help

It's the computer is realizing how your driving. Slower you drive and less gas you give it to get up to speed, the computer will say you will get more miles out of the tank because your not using as much fuel.

This happened to me as well. I'm at 9,500 miles now and estimated mileage has risen to 405 and is steady there. The trick is to reset your mpg when you fill up every time. I took this advice from another member here on a different thread and it has worked for me. Took a few tanks for it to take effect but this gives you a snap shot of each individual tank of gas and the mileage you achieved for "that tank".

thank you to everybody that answered this thread. BmoreRunner, can you tell me how to reset that system? :cowboy:

are there any drawbacks to resetting each fill up?

Same as you would a tripometer. You just hit the trip button until it cycles to your current average MPG on the dash and hold the button until it clears. I reset my trip A and MPG each time I fill up.

No drawback that I could think of. Unless you're really concerned about knowing your average MPG collectively from the time you bought the truck.

sorry to ask you this but could you tell me the process to that? I dont know of a trip button. I see a Phone (info) button and that has some option for charts and graphs.

Is there a button near the bottom of your speedometer? I see you are in a TE with nav. I'm in an SR5 with no nav. I would assume however that you still have an old school button that cycles your instrument cluster info from odometer to trip A, B...etc. You hit that button until your avg MPG shows up in this area and then hit and hold that button a few seconds until it resets.

oh snap!

you mean the tiny black stick on the gauge window. I cleared the info about the car from the Nav screen, now I wonder what the heck i deleted haha :bigok:

thanks for the help

I'm not so sure the range displayed is affected by resetting the MPG. I'm of the opinion that it is calculated by the truck's overall mpg.
BTW: mine is usually 435 at reset.

I have been re-setting it all every tankful since I have bought the truck and it still reads about 285 right after fill up. I guess I could d/c the battery and try and reset everything to factory. Thoughts? My MPG plows anyway. I think it is the way I drive. I don't have my foot in it all the way all the time by any means, but I sure don't watch the "ECO" light either. People honk if you accelerate at the speed it takes to keep that sucker green!!

my ECO light hasn't gone on once hahah :frisky:

I'm not sure how the 5th gen calculates when you are in "Eco Mode", but I have noticed two things: 1) The Eco light will go off if you put any but the slightest pressure on the accelerator and, 2) the Eco light will stay on whenever you have the cruise control engaged. The latter sparks the most curiosity, as I often disengage the cruise in hilly sections to keep the gearing higher when the T4R wants to downshift into a lower gear. I have found that I can often maintain the same speed (or nearly) without increasing the accelerator peddle in a higher gear than the point at which the Toyota wants to down shift (and rev higher). The interesting part is that the Eco light will stay on during the downshifts with cruise on, but go off if I disengage the cruise yet maintain accelerator pressure.

During acceleration, the Eco light will go off until I let pressure off of the accelerator as I approach my desired speed.

Does the torque converter stay locked in 5th? If not, your doing more harm than good because it will happily lock in 4th at 3500RPM.
