Mileage versus Modifications

Given my thread (question) about " Airbox Maintenance" spun off into a completely different (although interesting) subject/debate, I figured it only appropriate to give the subject it's own venue...Let's try getting information about who's done what to their truck(s), and gotten what kind of results, and even how the runners are used? Ready...set...go!

Bone stock '95 3.slow w/ auto trans.

I'm in eastern New Mexico driving flat roadways for the most part. I drive about 90 miles round trip (all highway) and have been seeing 17 to 18mpg if I keep it around 65-70mph. Anything over 75mph it drops to 16.5 or lower depending on my foot.

Only mods are the magnaflow cat and dynomax exhaust kit. Haven't had it on long enough to get any calculations yet.

'88 4Runner SR5 4x4
3.0L V6, 5-speed
31x10.5 all-terrains, 4.10 stock axle gear ratio

Full tune-up -- Sea Foamed -- spotless new throttle body -- good tire pressure -- light load -- easy driving -- fresh gear oils

Still only 14 city -- maybe 18 freeway .. :(

I've ordered a K&N air filter..

'94 3.0, Auto/OD (dont know if it's an option, but?), 265/70-17 Toyo MT (55 lbs air), synthetic EVERYTHING, open hubs in front, custom intake tube from box to intake, K&N filter in stock box, 2.5 exhaust from y-tube to rear, Flowmaster 40 series, no cat, cold air to trans tunnel, 2 trans coolers (fluid to fluid and air to fluid types, and use acetone most of the time...net result= best of 26.6 and 24 ish on last 800 mile round trip through high desert highways (3600 to over 5000 ft elevation)

'94, 3.0 Auto. 2wd, 119000 miles. Stock everything. Full tune up, timing belt, radiator flush, trans flush, valve cover gaskets, air filter, etc... at ~112000 miles. Use valvoline max life 10w40 every 3000miles. Running stock tire size, 235/75/15, michellin LTX tires and check tire pressure every fill up.
Best mileage since Jan 21mpg, worst 15mpg and can't get beter than that. I drive mostly to and from work on secondary roads(non interstate) at 40-60 mph. Occasional light (very light) trails and dirt roads on weekends for camping, fishing, kayaking etc...

Thanks hyde802 for tat mention about Fuelly.com. Nicer than my spreadsheet.

Edit: like a dumba$$, I spoke out of turn. Not running stock size tire since stock was 225/75/15. So basically my tires are ~half inch larger in diameter.

K&N drop in and Flomaster exhaust. Other than that she is stock-down to the sagging rear springs.
I throw a bottle of Lucas Oil in the tank every month or two, and replaced all belts, plugs, and fluids several months ago when I first bought her.
Over the last several months I have averaged 18.2 mpg across the board and closer to 21 mpg on the highway.
Admittedly, most of my miles are highway (about 85%), but I drive as fast as that 3.slow will let me.
I have noticed that pure around-town mileage is in the 15-16 range.
I don't use the a/c (because it has a serious leak, but that is another post for another day) so I assume I get a little help there.
I tried to take a screenshot of the iPhone app that I use to track mileage and fill-ups, but the forum won't let me upload it.

Here's the chart showing my fuel economy. I hope it loads this time.

I got a gas mileage increase of 15% on my 1992 Camry DLX, 5 speed, no cat, stock resonator and muffler, using 1 1/2 oz acetone per 15 gallon with 100% gas. At 255k miles it would get 33 mpg highway at 55 - 65 mph. The poor thing broke the oil pump drive sprocket, which gave me a good reason to get a 4Runner. I will be running acetone in it after I baseline it on 87 octane E10. It is hard to find good gas up here anymore.

The acetone lowers the vapor pressure of gasoline, allowing it to evaporate faster and burn more completely in the engine instead of the tailpipe. It does not hava as much energy per gallon as gasoline, so too much will result in less power and increased fuel consumption.

I like the modification ideas that you guys have put out on this forum, and I will be trying a bunch of them. Thanks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't acetone eat seals and gaskets and is corrosive? Is it just that it's such a small dilution rate that it doesn't matter?

See, and I'm wondering if it's really that easy, why aren't gas companies doing it at the pump and charging a premium?

On my old 1984, my mileage went up a lot with new plugs, wires and cap/rotor at about 60K miles. However, I undid all that by putting some lights on the roof, which created a lot of drag for the old four banger to overcome.
