"Miles Remaining" not even close

Anybody find that the "miles remaining" estimation is completely off?

The other day, I had it down to literally 1 mile remaining. I knew it wasn't that close but was curious how much of the 23 gallon tank I would fill. The pump kicked off at just over 20 gallons. "1 mile remaining" and the gauge sitting on E and there's damn near 3 gallons left in the tank.

Just seems odd. I just joined the 4Runner club 6 months ago. Is this a common thing?

It's normal. It's just Toyota trying to keep their drivers safer.
 
The range is not 100% accurate because car manufacturers do not want their cars to run off the bottom of the tank, where presumable particulates collect and can get sucked up into the fuel pump or through the fuel lines. It also is a precaution before you burn out your fuel pump. The fuel pump needs to be submerged to function properly. If air gets into it, it can run too fast and burn itself out. This can become a costly expense. It is a safety measure so you dont run the tank dry which can cause more premature damage to the engine and fuel system.

Don't take things too literal. Fill up when the fuel light turns on. Even better when you have less than 1/4 tank.

There are a few threads with a lot of real world calculations folks have run over the years.
Gas light???

In general, a lot of manufacturers do this to urge drivers to get to gas stations before the run out. The light coming on with 2-3 gallons left is pretty common, especially in sedans and vehicles that get 20+MPG allowing a lot of miles left to find a filling station.

The 4runner does the same thing with the light on the dash and with the computer calcs for miles left / range, etc.

Our family has three 4runners, a Rav4 and a Highlander and they all do this.
 
Next time run it dry, then you can say with authority how much was left after the light came on. I've only put more than 21 gallons in my truck once. 21.019 to be exact, and it took me 426 miles! Not even close to my best mileage.

You need to have enough gas in the tank to account for the fuel moving around in the tank as you turn, stop, start, climb hills, etc. If it is important enough to you, you could modify your tank pickup with a Holly Hydromat so you can suck every last drop of gas out of the tank.

Mine took ~20 gallons at 0 miles.

Damn, my average MPG on the little screen has been at 16.4 for a while now. Guess I need to get on the highway more often.
