Mini Morimoto RetroQuik Bi-Xenon Projector Swap for '06+ Headlamps

It is hard to tell from the picture, but is that with both headlights on?? Or just is that just showing the driver's side? Something doesn't look right.

Yes, that's both headlights on. I took the picture on the left side of the vehicle so maybe I didn't capture the right side light as well.

looks like your cutoff is about the same as mine in terms of color. but its definitely not what they advertise as their cutoff lines.

Yes. The factory projectors are 2.5 inches the d2s is 3.0 inches. There will be lots of cutting. I plan on getting a brand new set of OEM headlights to cut up. I built some confidence chopping up my yellowed oe headlights. I've heard really good things about their retroquick drop in kits. I'm going for something a little more exotic. I've got a set of rigid duallys, and a set of lightforce 170's that are going into my next build.

Do you have any pics with the RX projectors installed? Did you have to make the hole in the shroud bigger for the 3" projector or did you leave it at the stock size? Just curious because I have been thinking about doing this swap as well. Based on the research I have done on the mini D2S projectors, there is no way I will be using those.

The RetroQuick kit is no longer available on TRS, but they have the brackets on closeout still. I have a complete Mini D2S Bi-Xeon setup (3" Lens) sitting in the garage. Would it work with the retro-quick bracket? Anyone have the specs from the Retro-Quick kits before it was discontinued?

They offer some generic "Acme Basic" projector with the closeout bracket, but would much rather use what I already have. Basically just wanting to avoid tearing my headlights apart to find out it won't work. I don't mind a little cutting and work, just don't have the ability to fabricate custom brackets if they are required.

Try contacting TRS first. Lots of retrofitted light here have different hardware (projectors/etc). If you have dealt with TRS in the past, you know there customer service is top notch.

(I believe I saw them sold separately, without the ACME projector for $5-$10). Either way, do this upgrade.

I'm now on the fence whether I want to change out my D2S 2.0's (which came with the retro-quik) and replace with the D2S 4.0's.

I loved the Bi-xeon D2S setup before and was grumbling about not having HID high beams anymore when I got the 4Runner, great to know it will likely work.

Also, the wife has a Subaru BRZ with the D4S Bi-Xeon setup + leveling...they are freaking amazing!

I just switched over from the ACME basic d2s bi-xenon projectors to the Morimoto Mini D2S 4.0 3" lens setup, and the adapter plates were useless
Your best bet is to cannibalize your stock halogen projectors to make a plate to bolt your new projectors onto. The projector bowl and lens are both bolted to a sheet metal plate with the cutoff shield integrated, and cutting that up for use as an adapter plate for the aftermarket projectors worked well for me.

Thanks for the info Turbo, I have been looking at that projector as well. How is the pattern and output of the 4.0 compared to the Acme? Got any pics you can share with us? Also, just to confirm, you modified and re-used the factory mounting with this projector? I would love to hear more.

The 4.0 is a different level that the Acme RetroQuick. Much sharper cutoff, and wider. Here is a lousy picture with the 4500K 55W 4.0 Left, and 4500K 35W Acme Right:




The RetroQuick brackets are already cut out for a large projector to fit in them, and the 4.0 doesn't line up to areas where there is usable material. I didn't take pictures of the brackets I made, but luckily for you, I have a leak I need to reseal, so I should be able to take them apart this weekend and take pictures as a template. Basically you just need the top and bottom pieces of the stock bracket (has 2 or three tabs on the bottom that fit onto the headlight housing)

I reused the Acme's in my fiancee's accord, so here is a 4500K 35W Retroquik vs 1998 Honda accord headlight for comparison

the acme d2s is a bad projector, that was the morimoto d2s 2.0. they werent a great performer, sure its a great projector than the halogens.

They'll be a big improvement over your stock lights, and will bolt right in.
One thing you need to make sure you get is the straight through style D2S connector for the bulb, rather than the 90 degree connector. The 90 will hit the inside of the headlight housing.

Well my plan is to use them for a while and save for some better projectors. i wanted a direct fit for right now as I don't have time to do another complete retro. I did my 2003 Accord and my G8 with proper retro. TRS told me the Ds2 2.5 ACME were the only ones that fir the direct fit brackets. The 3.0 and 4.0 are way too big. I know I'd have to modify then. No time for that and the FXR projectors are out of my price range right now.

No mods to the headlight housing or projector, just cutting up the stock projector's mounting plate, drilling holes in the right spot, and bolting it all together.

I have to tear one back apart this weekend, and I'll take pictures of how I made everything fit.
