Mini tie downs

Anyone found any use for the factory mini tie downs that attache to the roof rack rail of the Trail Edition?
The position of the curve does not allow to use it to tie items to the roof (only to tie the car to the ground? may be the hole loops on the screw can be used for some mini rope?

Anyone found a successfull use for the hook on the mini tiedowns on the roof rack? Looks like it would hold a grocery bag nicely but I'm afraid it would blow off on the way home
