Minor paint repair

One week in with our '14 LE and a rock hit the hood chipping the paint. It's not bad enough to repaint the entire hood but the Attitude Black is chipped down to a silver/white. When I took a photo of the hood with the flash on, I was very surprised by the color flecks of white,blue, green and silver that you can't see most of the time.

Any references on places to buy touchup paint? Are the Attitude Black pens for the Landcruiser/Camry the same Attitude Black for the 4runner? I'm not seeing a pen for a '14 4Runner Attitude Black listed.

I did a brief search in the forum already but if there are steps or recommendations already posted, please point me in the right direction.

Jesus that has a shitload of scratches for being a brand new truck. I would order straight from Toyota, I have tried aftermarket and wasn't pleased with the match.

I used dr. color chip on my hood for a chip that was down to the metal. It took about 3 coats, but it matches perfectly, and you can only see it now if you hit it with light a certain way (you can see a little divit where the chip was).

Touch up paint usually looks bad because the paint usually gets on the surrounding areas of paint around the chip. With Dr Color Chip, you use a special solution and cloth to remove the excess touchup paint around the chip, so all that remains is the paint in the chip. The more coats you do the better it looks.

It is kinda spendy $50, but it is totally worth it. I was skeptical at first, but I am really glad I got some! I can try to post a pic of it this weekend after I wash my 4runner.

Not scratched, just a crappy phone camera with the flash on. The "scratches" are just a reflection from the flash hitting the paint. That was the only way to show the color flecks.

Thanks Willy! I'll check out that site. A repair guy said he would "mix up a color and fix it" but I'm reluctant since it's not a pure black. This wasn't the first modification we were wanting to make. :mmph:

I was able to take a couple pics of the rock chip yesterday after I was finally able to wash the 4Runner!

As you can see, the color matches well, and there is no touch-up paint outside of the chip. That is the great thing about Dr. Color Chip. From a few feet away, it is really hard to see the chip. It has to be clean, and the right light for you to see the chip. It actually took me a few sec to find it so I could take a pic! I could have filled it in more if I spent more time, but for $50 and about 30 min, its pretty damn good!

I used the "Thumb Smear" application method they talk about in the instructions and many videos I have seen.

It is magnetic grey. Dr. Color chip should either have your paint code, or tell you how to find it so they can get a match.

You can check you driver side door jam for the paint code.
It'll look something like this:

Than you can search that paint code and buy some touch up paint. I've seen small genuine touch up paint go for about $12 on Amazon.

Edit: If your paint is Attitude Black Mica, that paint code is 218.

218 is the code I was going to use although it looked like 208 was the code they had for a black 2014 4Runner. I'm assuming that is an SR5 black. Definitely different colors so I am hesitant to try this product but will verify the color before I order.

You got me doing a little bit of research on this cause yesterday I washed my car and found a couple of small rock chips.

From my limited search, the self repair tools won't be 100%. You will basically have to have the hood repainted. But you will eventually get another rock chip. Don't go this route.

Some were using the Genuine paint and buying small paint brushes from hobby stores. But this takes a skilled and very patient person to get the paint just right. And usually several coats. Some people use squeegees, buffers, excess paint removers among other methods to get it just right. (If you're picky (like me) this might be a route to go, if you're not, don't go this route)


I'm thinking of going the way of [MENTION=52619]Whiplash Willy[/MENTION] and using the Dr ColorChip kit.

For me, the ease of use and not making a bigger mess is what wins me over for this. It might not be perfect but from what I've seen, trying to do it yourself, it will never be 100%

My kit is on order from Dr Chipcolor. Made a note in the comment section that Attitude Black is new for the '14 4runner LE so hopefully it will match up. On another forum, someone mentioned humidity as a factor when applying and to follow the directions exactly. I'll try to document the before and after but it's so difficult to take a good photo of a small section of paint. At this point, anything has to be better than the white that is showing through now. Definitely not willing to paint the whole hood.
