Found a couple threads on Tacoma world and some other places, but wanted to get the opinion of my trusted 5th Gen crowd. I am upsizing to 285/70/17 as soon as I make up my mind on which tires to buy. I am leaning hard toward Duratracs if I don't have to put out the cash for a full size spare. What is your opinion about running the stock 265 spare (not permanently of course) with something like a 285 Duratrac?
Also, maybe a 285 spare, but just a REALLY cheap...possibly almost bald used tire I find on Craig's List or Ebay?

There are several reasons not to run a mismatched spare and I will get into that in a bit. First, a little math: A 265/70/17 generic tire has a diameter of 31.6" and a 285/70/17 has a diameter of 32.7", which equates to 1.1" difference, or a little over 1/2 inch radius difference. The circumference difference is of course greater, being 99.73" and 102.8" respectively. The difference of 3.5" means one tire rolls 3.5" farther every rotation. I won't bore you with the math but the 265 tire will try to travel over six feet farther every mile. Why does this matter? Here's why:
What do anti lock brakes, vehicle stability control, transmission, down hill ascent, transfer case and front and rear differentials and other systems all have in common? Answer: They all use tire rotation speed either electronically or mechanically in order to do their job!
The 4Runner uses tire rotational speed to determine if the vehicle is operating at normal performance. Let's say you are pulling out onto a busy highway and there is fine gravel underneath the rear wheels. You step on the accelerator pedal, you start to spin and you hear a "chatter." That is the vehicle sensing wheel slip on one tire or the other and braking the spinning one to keep it's rpm the same as the one with traction. Same for all the other systems.
Now, what happens when you throw a tire on that will automatically, because of it's decreased radius, be turning at a different rpm? The answer is the truck will try to compensate for the spin by activating whatever electronics that are needed. Now this is in two wheel drive. In four wheel drive, you will have one tire turning faster than the others which will very shortly start to bind up the driveline. Your tire will of course spin but it will put undue stress on the differentials and transfer case. Even if you decide all this is still OK, do you want to go into an unexpected skid around a turn and let VSC be confused on what to do because of you saving a few bucks? No, me either.
Now, while I don't know what tolerances Toyota engineers put into their algorithms for speed sensors, I do know they are there. It is common for a tire to have more wear than others, such as having a flat on tires that have 50K miles and putting a spare with no miles and new tread. Also going around a sharp corner the front and outside tires travel a farther distance than the rear and inner tires. For this reason Toyota has built in rpm tolerances to allow for each of these conditions. Now, if you put a new 265 with a completely worn out 285 you maybe could be OK. What are the chances of that though? Your choice and I hope this helps.
