misfire on cylinder 2

Ive been having a recurring misfire on cylinder 2,code p0302. Each time i reset the cel it stays off for about 120 miles. I switched plugs 1 and 2 with the same results. New wire from 5 to 2 with no results. Gonna swap coils 1 and 5 to see if that does anything. Im in the middle of a drive to Cleveland so i can't do anything too serious. Does anyone have any ideas what else could be the problem? I'm gonna install a new fuel filter when i get some free time.

I see we have something in common! It's definitely unique. I was scared of it being an injector, the weird thing is that i was getting unbelievable mileage

Does it actually misfire when you get the code? Or is it just the light coming on and the code popping up?

It is misfiring. After swapping coils I no longer get the code but it is still misfiring. If I'm waiting at a light it will like jerk a little and once it changes and I start accelerating it sputters and the throttle response sucks. my mileage went up about 4mpg which is really confusing to me. well technically if an injector was stuck closed then that means youd be using less fuel.... which would account for the better fuel economy?

Does the misfire occur when the vehicle is hot? I am starting to see the injectors failing electrically on high mileage 5VZ-FEs more commonly now; usually when heat soaked and they no longer open properly or at all (same as the stuck closed comment above.) The problem "corrects" itself when cold because the injector coil starts working again.

Can you pull the spark plugs out ? Check to see if they are clean , possible tiny head gasket leak? Before messing with injectors, do a compression test.

For P0302 here's the list of stuff it could be, in diagnosis suggested order:
1) Open or short in engine wire
2) Connector connection

3) Vacuum hose connector
4) Ignition system

5) Injector
6) Fuel pressure

7) Mass air flow meter
8) Engine coolant temp sensor
9) Compression pressure
10) Valve clearance
11) Valve timing
12) PCV valve and hose and
13) ECM.

Wow-i guess start with the quick/ez stuff if out of town. Luck-let us know what ya find.

I went from 19.5mpg on mickey thompson stz to 22.8mpg on bf goodrich long trails, just about 16.66%. It looks like that could be the problem.

It will misfire when cold also. In town is pretty bad and on the highway going 50 or up a hill it will also misfire. when going faster it seemed to run smoother.

None of the part stores around here have one in stock. I have kinda a busy weekend already but I should be able to test it when I get to michigan on monday. If I were to order a new injector, what brand would you recommend? Its a 96 6 cylinder btw

I'm sorry I wouldn't be able to recommend that as I don't know that. Fuel injectors aren't cheap either. Maybe you can find a oem, denso on eBay or amazon as I would think it would be best choice. I would personally buy few new spark plugs and replace it in those cylinders that are causing a misfire. If it helps then replace all spark plugs, as they recommend to replace all at once. Also I noticed my coil pack was bad. And the way I found out that a coil pack was bas was at night. Basically if a coil pack is bad you should be able to see a spark escaping somewhere at night when you give it throttle. Turn the car on, pop the hood and carefully observe around the coils when you gently give it throttle with your hand and see if you see a spark escape. Only at night because you cant see the spark during day light. There are some good videos on Google on how to diagnose 5vzfe misfire

Try to do a compression test before buying new injectors.

Picked up a compression tester, I'll see if I can get around to it today. I have gone 210 miles since yesterday, still misfiring but no longer have a cel or code

Good, if good compression which I'm sure it will be , at least you know in the back of your head that your head gasket is good. You know. Then you can either replace plugs,coil pack, wires, or the injector.

Well I bought new plugs, installed this morning and so far no more misfiring. I didn't end up doing a compression test cause I was kinda tired of it haha. If it acts up again I will do one@kanger328
