The numbers that you are being quoted seem pretty ridiculous though. You can buy an entire 2004 1GR-FE engine, completely rebuilt, on eBay for less than $2500 shipped (from a seller with good feedback). You can buy a used head from car-part.com (it's a website that acts as a network for salvage yards nationwide) for $150 to $200.

Thanx. I'm not going to run all of this by my girlfriend, but after taking this morning to dig deeper into this engine thing, I can't believe these prices I'm hearing from 3 shop around here! I'm now thinking of getting heads from car-part and getting a "good ol' boy" to replace the heads. Just gotta see if I really have the time to deal with it. It's her truck, she's been texting me all morning about how much she loves her new-to-her 2011 truck. So who wants to break that up?:biggrin1:

I am not a mechanic, but it would seem to me in order to tell if the heads were so bad that you could not surface them you would have to remove them and take them to a machine shop to verify this. I would think it isn't likely that hey are that bad unless the engine overheated. 8-10k is insane, you should be able to do it for half that.

car-part.com has heads for 125-250 or so, get two of those, have them surfaced and put on if yours truly are that bad. They also have an 06 engine with 47k for 2500.
