i'm not much of a youtuber or videographer to say the least, but occasionally post garage updates. the addition of an SUV for camping/overlanding has been a super fun project the past few months and a welcome addition to the stable. truck is about 4-5 months old, has 4K miles and is getting around 18-19 MPG which is astounding given my modes and tires. i also go into my initial impressions on my King setup during the video. looking forward to some great camping and snowboarding trips this winter, and some utah trips!

thanks to this forum, i'm most of the way through my mods, just a rear bumper next which should be here in a few weeks. I made a short video to summarize the mods to date if anyone is interested.. cheers and thanks to the forum for all the help along the way! if you're around SoCal and want to orgainize a trip with a few rigs to mojave or death valley, hit me up. :lookout:

Nice!

I like the way you setup the roof rack, really practical.

I am curious about the look when the rotopax and the maxtrax are on it with the gun case.

You can see it a bit here

"I'm come from a minimalist background".

Adds close to 300lbs with a rear bumper.

I’m definitely not a minimalist and didn’t say that in the video, but I did say I come from an ultralight backpacking and cycling background, so I’m conscious of how incremental weight adds up. That rear bumper will be close to 250, so not near 300lb, but definitely heavy. If they made an aluminum or partial aluminum version I would have bought it, but for my full size spare and overall design that rear bumper coming seemed like a good choice for my needs based on what’s available. The expedition one stuff looks super nice. One cool thing, I ditched the hilift and mounting bracket setup that I was going to use and went with the safe jack system instead. That saved me anothe 20-30lbs off what was previously going to be mounted on there.
So while nothing you said was actually accurate, I do appreciate that you watched the video! Cheers! :llama:

I realize the bumper will only weigh 250lbs, but with a hilift (though you won’t be using), lights, possible jerry cans will add up. Plus the addition of the spare onto the rear bumper (as opposed to underneath) will increase leverage and make the rear sag a bit more. This is not additional mass, just moving the mass into a worse spot.

And I realize the term minimalist may have different meanings depending on the topic. I was referring to minimal weight.

Now minimalist as our founding fathers meant or today's version of minimalist?

Well done video and 4Runner. I like the straight simple look of the RCI sliders and thought about those, but, I went with the Shrockworks sliders. I like your 3/4 Prinsu rack and have been considering one. I had the dealer add the moonroof to my Pro and I’m curious to the amount of wind noise, vibrations or any other idiosyncrasies you can think of with that rack.

Nice video and nice looking 4Runner. I like the look, and while I'm not spending the $$ you are in various parts, I'm going for the same functionality.

Great Build. I've got a 2017 TRD Pro with RCI Sliders, alum Skids, C4 Steeel gas skid, SSO Low Pro front bumper with 10k Warn,

I went with King as well, and the 440 Rear OME springs and the SPC UCA up front. 275 BFG A/T with 1/4" spacers. I had a lot of rake after initial install. Even with a rear Fridge and ARB drawer system the back is crazy stiff. I'm swapping springs this weekend until after I add a rear bumper.

I also had to expose a lot of threads on the front coilovers just to get rid of crazy rake. I did the fender mod and i still get body mount rub on drivers side when backing up. I also get major nosedive on braking and the front just feels way too soft. I have the standard front springs I believe, which are 550lb or 500lb? I'm not sure and would have to go look it up. I just got the 650lb springs, and maybe thats too stiff, but I will swap them this weekend.

I had ordered up from Filthy Motorsports with all mods mentioned. Ben was pretty good on all of that stuff and didnt think that I needed stiffer springs up front. I think I do. Also, was a ***** to find a shop[ that could get the alignment right.

Do you have measurements of your rig from center wheel to fender lip? I love the stance.

also, do you know your coil spring rate up front?

And I love those rims.

Thanks. Great vid.

i notced that when the sunroof is open, i'm getting a bit more wind on my hair at speeds below 40mph. when going faster, there is no wind entering the cabin and there is no noise at all when the rack is loaded or unloaded. completely quite, and I don't notice a difference. at all, which was a pleasant surprise.

Wait can you really not use your sunroof with the full length Prinsu rack?

my understanding is that you can't user the sunroof rear pop up feature because it will likelly hit the cross bars. that said, you can completely adjust crossbar location, so it's ultimately about where and how you set up your loads and accessories. I will never mount a roof top tent, so I only needed 3/4.

Hi, thanks for the comments on the 4runner build. yeah i also ordered through filthy motorsports and thought I also got the wrong front springs. Mine are 550, which is what Ben recommended, then I def had to dial in some preload to get the ride height correct. He strongly cautioned against using too heavy a spring up front if I hadn't dialed in much preload. he was right, and talked me out of ordering 650s which a lot of people apparently incorrectly do.
Because i'm using aluminum armor and front low pro bumper, I might be 30-40 lbs lighter than a steel setup, but maybe you can still get away with 550s and preload. what controls front dive is more about valving than spring. spring and preload is just for supporting the vehicle at the correct height. valviing will control how fast the oil moves through the shock.

I can do some measurements later today and post them here.

Hefty doesn't seem to sell an aluminum version so I'm curious about this as well. In fact they don't even sell their own, they have the SSO Slimline listed on their site. Store - Hefty Fabworks

Hi Jimmy. Here is the story as I know it. Chris Hefty had an agreement with SSO to make the aluminum low-pro fronts (just like the SSO Steel fronts). SSO made the steel versions, and both vendors were selling both versions. Hefty is an alu specialist as I understand it.

The alu low pro was on both SSO and Hefty sites until about 2 months ago. I'll leave it to Hefty to explain why they aren't selling alu anymore, but they told me (in short) it was due to production times, order volume/batch ordering challenges. I don't want to get too far out of my lane, but that's what I recall.

I was concerned they stopped making alu fronts because of strength or other issues. I was assured by Hefty that was def not the case, it was projection and logistics. Hefty's backlog is pretty insane.
I would call Chris Hefty and ask him if he will still make you an alu front or do a batch for the forum.. they are insanely stout, but also lighter by a lot compared to steel if you care about weight.

Thanks for the response. I was wondering if you lowered your rear window to alleviate that issue. Does that help?
