Modifications on a 1990 T4R 22re automatic

Hello! I am new to the thread, Toyota's, and off roading. I just bought a 1990 T4R 22re 2.4l automatic and was wondering what all you pro 4x4ers recommend I do for modifications. Right now it's super super slow, which sucks. I'm getting an exhaust leak fixed and the engine is showing codes 51 & 52. So those sensors are in the process of being dealt with. I'm also getting a torque camshaft for the motor. I'm also contemplating wether to get 4:88 front and rear diffs or 5:29's. Which one would be better for BC trails?
Is there anything else I can do to make this thing faster?

There are a few good moderate lifts, OME probably being your best option, providing a 2" lift which is more than enough to clear bigger tires. As far as gearing 5.29s will be good with bigger tires but may be over kill with a 31 or 33. Also Check your vin because some models came with a factory 4.88. Power wise the biggest improvement you could possibly get is to throw a 3.4 liter engine from a 3rd gen, otherwise there's no sure fire way to get a whole lot more power out the 22re or the 3.0 for that matter. There are also more and more companies that are making bumpers for the 2nd gen and they look damn good.

It will always be slow no matter what you do. Gearing depends on what size tires you want to run. If you went with something like a 33/10.5 tire, I'd get 5.29s because of the automatic. You always want a lower ratio than your 5 speed counterpart. :jump:

x2.
S'why I got 5.29s, though they don't like to go too fast on the highway without making noise..

Thanks everyone for the gear advice...though sucks to hear there's nothing I can do really., buut thanks again :)

They shouldn't be making any noise compared to 4.10 gears. At least mine don't, but they are made by yukon.
Seriously? Hmm. Mine are yukon too, the rear put together by marlin crawler.. it only makes noise on the coast side (forgot the term) so my mechanic said it's okay. haven't blown up yet! Maybe on the way to Moab.. LoL

Its a small 4cyl in a heavy runner. Its nevery going to be a powerhouse. There are small things, like the cam, that you can do to help. Check out LC Engineering, If you really want power, youll have to add more cylinders.
