It's absolutely a water seal from the factory on the "dust cover". Whether it's the only water barrier I don't know without looking at the internals of the housing. It should be water tight.

I regret installing Ionic CXV running boards. They're very slippery when wet, the stainless is corroded after a year and not covered under warranty since you're supposed to regularly wax it :ybrick:
I also regret getting the factory roof rack cross bars. They're too close to the roof causing the sheet metal to be scratched by my canoe.
Planning to replace both this summer.

I also regret buying the OEM cross bars. They're crap. They're so close to the roof that they're almost unusable.
And the factory carpet floor mats. I took mine all out and replaced within a few months with maxpider ones. I've been pretty happy with them.
In all honestly there are times I regret not buying a LC200. I go back and forth.
And - I kinda wish I had not bought the remote reservoir shocks. They've leaked once and have been a pain to deal with mounting location and keeping them from rattling or making noise in heavy washboard situations. I've had them sorted for a few years. But there's really no reason I need them. I'd prefer to just have regular non-res shocks that are simpler.

That dust cap gives access to the entire inside of the light housing. If it failed, or you drill a hole in it, moisture can absolutely get into the headlight housing.

I found that once my headlight dried out after a hot day, a little silicone around the dust cap hole solved my issue. Haven't had any more moisture in my headlight housing since then, and I love my HID's.

My rear bumper. From the customer service to the tire carrier plate cracking, I should have researched more. Its also a pain to get to the cargo area with two swingouts. I knew what I was getting into, but I also did not realize how many times I use the cargo area until I got the bumper on. (more on the bumper in my sig)
That said, it is simple to get the tire off when you get a flat on the trail, I dont have "dirty" things inside my truck anymore. Examples include: extra fuel cans, shovel, axe, trash (trasharoo on my tire).
I also sort of regret the 3" Icon springs. They are incredibly stiff even after a year of use. If you have a drawer system and a fridge, it might be for you, but if you dont have a constant load for in-town driving, you are riding high all the time.

This is only my experience.
Icon customer service is terrible and the bro-like douche flat billed hat attitude should have been a red flag from the start. All companies are going to have QC issues from time to time, that's reasonable. BUT..it's how the company handles the issues that makes the difference and ICON was terrible and I had to kick and scream to get issues resolved. Never again. I'll leave it at that.

Couldn't agree more with you on the flat brimmed hat attitude. I talked to Icon, Fox and King when deciding on my lift. Icon had the "our stuff the best on the planet Bro" attitude. Fox would barely give you the time of day and didn't know crap about their own products. King was amazing and had a wealth of information. Guy even called me back a few hours later with some other info he thought I'd like to have. Probably stent an hour BSing on the phone both times. No comparison!!

Personally I feel Icons just look pretty. Something you'd find on a VIP ride or maybe a GWagon. In the end I don't think you can beat King or Fox, espeically when all 3 are within a couple hundred of eachother.

Other than looks, was there any other reason to take yours off?
Another question, is there a reason why others regret their snorkel? Its next on my list and I'm not apprehensive to the "you're-drilling-into-body-panels" argument.

For what it's worth, I actually don't regret mine. I got a really good deal on a used Safari. If I'm honest, the main reason I got it was because I thought it looked cool. Here lately though, it's been a nice added insurance benefit with the amount of rain we've gotten. I've also been in deep enough water a few times on the street (near the coast) that I wouldn't have been as comfortable without it. I should mention that I've also done the e-locker and rear differential breather relocation mod too.
Was I at least a little hesitant to drill a hole in the fender? Yes. But with all my other mods that I already have, it wasn't going to make much of a difference.
Overall, I've been really happy with it. The plastic is tough and has not faded in the sun. I've had no problems with rain getting into the airbox. I drove 500 miles through a tropical storm back in the fall and the airbox was bone dry. I really have no complaints.

My buddy had ICON on his 4th gen 4R. Always had problems with leaking seals. Replaced them three times! When I opened Overland Warehouse and developed the Radflo design for 4R's he switched over and never had problem in years of tough off-roading. He sold and bought a Tacoma but the 4R is still running around with the Radflos. ICON is all about the Bling factor and a bazillion "stages".

Just want to say thinks to everyone for the great thread.
I'm a first time 4Runner owner and love to mod past vehicles, and this has been a great resource in deciding which way I want to go in that aspect.
I know for a fact now, after reading this thread, that I'll avoid RTTs and drawers entirely, and might just get a Wilco hitch and SSO slimline bumper instead of full size steelie front and rear bumpers.
So far for me, my only real regret has been picking nerf bars over sliders. Granted, right now I'm only doing fire breaks and some sand pits, they're really for an extra step for the kiddos, but I think I should have just held out and saved a bit more for sliders which to a degree are just as much of a step surface as running boards or nerfs but are more functional.

The only reason I took mine off is due to parting it out. I was going back to stock to trade it in. Ended up deciding to keep the rig and built it back up. The snorkel is great for the assurance of clean/dry air. If I had kept my rig the way it was, I would have left it. Now that I traded for a stock fender plus cash, not sure I will spend the money a second time. It's pretty low on my list. Funny thing is, I've been in deeper water now without the snorkel than when I had one.
Before you drill the hole use the snorkel as a funnel for your beer!
What snorkel did you have? Did you not have to drill into the a pillar? The ones I've seen involved drilling into that a pillar. A fender is replaceable, that a pillar is for life.
