moonroof drain system??

so, i had my moonroof cover open when i was going through car wash and felt some drips on my face/head... noticed it was coming from front of the moonroof. also when raining pretty hard, i open up the cover and can feel some drops/moisture around the front of the seal where it shuts. i don't notice any of the water getting inside the cabin but i was wondering if this is normal and it has a drain system? i thought moonroofs/sunroofs were more water proof than this... a bit disappointed.

something is wrong with it. the sunroof on my '03 stays bone dry during heavy rain and car washes. when i first got it, and every now and then, i would feel around the entire sunroof and it would be dry. the sooner you take care of it the better before rust starts to set in.

My dealership replaced my sunroof under warranty when the seal kept getting pushed out on its own when the window is opened and closed. I have a 2008.

crap!!! was afraid of that.... have over 60k now, so donno where i should take it? i can't imagine dealer would do anything for free.

The seal around perimeter of sunroof tends to dry out and stiffen. Keep it clean and pickup some door seal rejuvanator at the store.

I can try that but no idea if that's causing the issue, or if it's actually a defect.

Check around the inside of the channel and see if you have any leaves or debris inside that may be blocking the seal, otherwise, sounds like the seal is toast

wondering if i should take off the glass part, clean the seal real well and use some rubber rejuvenation spray. worth the effort if i can stop the leak, and how hard is it to take off the glass door?

after looking at the moonroof closer, it just seems like the water seeps through the rubber seal, between the metal and the moonroof door rubber seal. i also notice the drain holes... guess they are there just in case... which is a good thing. i didn't think it was 'suppose' to leak.

alright so i took to a toyota dealer service center to see what they thought, and the technician looked at it, tested it... etc.. and said the seep of water coming through is NORMAL, yes he said that. That's why that drain system is there... "you're gonna get some leakage but the drain system gets rid of the water" so.... it's normal as long as it doesn't get into the cabin.

id love for all you moonroof/sunroof owners out there check yours when it's raining or when you're going through a car wash and tell me if yours does it too? im not sure if i believe that it's normal... or if it is actually suppose to do that, i don't like the fact it does. They didn't charge me anything to check it out, so im glad about that.

yes, he said the drain system looks clean... nothing block the holes, etc.

the second post on this thread says his is bone dry, so i donno what to believe anymore.

I haven't noticed and drain problem but after inspecting mine I have some rust where the drain holes are in the moon roof itself. Any ideas what I should do? Glad your prob is fixed though!

well according to the dealer service center, my "problem" isn't a problem... but I don't like how the water gets past the glass window.

im thinking about taking it somewhere else, may even to another dealer service center and get a second opinion.

i was looking at the moonroof again, and the gap between rubber seal and the metal frame doesn't seem tight enough....given why the water easily seeps through.

Good idea and I agree. Not all dealerships are good even if it does say "Toyota" on the front of the building. Had a local dealership do a small job for me and by me not accepting their shotty work I ended up with 3 free oil changes, free T4R rubber floor mats, and a brand new set of tires (which I am still running). I now drive an extra 30 mins to another dealership if I need anything at all. I try to do most things myself though but there are just some things that are best to let the dealer do. Let me know what you find out. I will be moving to Temple TX for 3-6 months for work and thought about having a dealership take care of my rusty moonroof problem. Wouldn't mind more free stuff I guess but rather them NOT jack up my truck. Good luck. :ybrick:
