More TomTom Issues...

so youre saying...put old tomtom SD card in reader, copy all files to...in this case a folder on your computer (unless you have 2 SD card readers) then put new 2GB SD card in copy files back to card and should be good to go?

Yes, thats basically what worked for me and a few other people I have heard from. If it doesn't work right away, insert the NEW card into the reader and open Tomtom home. It should recognize it as a tomtom device. Then all you have to do is "update" it in tomtom home and it should work fine. If it doesn't, call tomtom and they will give you a site to DL new app software to put on the card.

Hope it helps,

B

He is exactly right. If your files are corrupted because your TomTom crashed before backing it up you will need to call Tomtom and have them upload the map to your account. If you explain that the unit is new and it crashed before you had a chance to back it up they should not give you a hard time about it. Just throwing an empty card in there will not help you. It would be the same as putting a new hard drive in your computer with no OS installed. It won't recognize it and won't know what to do. Keep in mind that the map itself is 900+ MB if I remember correctly.

I heard that there was a 4-6 week back order on the new cards as well, but somehow my dealership got me one in 4 days. Luck or timing maybe. I have only had it back for 3 days and have yet to back it up. Does anyone know if it is better to use the version of TomTomHome from the disk that comes with the TomTom, or to use the newer version from their website?

hey ATX do you have pics of your silver UR? im curious to see what that looks like. ive never seen a picture of one.

the guy at TomTom told me the one on their website is the newest version and much better than the disc version. So I moved all of my files but the corrupted ones, but it shows "no maps found". TomTom customer service can get me the maps?

4-6 week delay is for the new application/SD card which was released on 08/06/08. Being that today is the 8th I don't see how anyone can have this yet. I should be one of the first people in the country to get this update as it was ordered "critical" 1 hour after the bullitin was released to the dealers.

You may want to contact your local dealer for details of this release.

As for upgrading to a 2GB card with the old application - It should work for a while, but the application/system are still unstable. For those who are running the 2GB card... Have you tried to update via Tomtom Home, and do you use the Bluetooth function built-in to the Tomtom?

I have a 2gig card and use Bluetooth. I have it set up for both my phone and my wifes phone and it works without any issues. After re-installing everything on the 2gb card I have not had any problems (Knock on Wood)
The easiest way to back up is just mount your card to your PC and just copy the contents into a folder on your PC. If you should ever need a new card you can just re-format the card and copy the contents onto the new card. You technically can backup without the software. I am curious to get a hold of the newer version. I will have to contact my dealer this week although I can guarantee they will have no clue to what I am talking about and will get the stare of confusion when I ask about it.

No, I don't have any pics of my silver UR yet, but it wouldn't take much effort to do it.

As for the release of the new card. I agree, I don't know how I got one so fast either. This is my 2nd card to be replaced and it was ordered last week and they told my service person that I was getting a new larger (2G) updated card. Unfortunately, the people at the dealership know less than all of us and can't provide details.

I also use the Bluetooth and have had no problems with it, other than I feel like I have to shout sometimes on the highway for the person to hear me.

My TomTom has not worked right since day one. The day after I bought it... It spent 7 1/2 hours in the service sept. Just to get it to power on again. Now... The screen will not change to night mode with the headlights. So far, it is a neverending battle.

I got the newest release of the software a couple of weeks back. It seems the Ver .4200 is new and improved application. Is been running since I got the update with no problems.

FYI, I did not do the Tomtom home update. I think there is an issue with it corrupting (sp?) one of the files... from what I can recall.

I have not had a single problem with my tomtom....but I bought it only on the 10th of this month. Does anyone know how to find out what version you have for the card? I'm going to talk to my sales guy and get my hands on the new version. Is it free? What do we need to tell them? That toyota issued a recall on the card?

You will be able to get it from the dealer. There should be no charge associated with the swap as it is a known problem with the application software.

The easiest way to determine if you have the updated application is to look at your SD card. If it says 4200 on it then you should be cherry.

OMG!!! I got off work...went to my car...started it up...then. Something different this time. It shows the tomtom in a cartoon type.......with the memory card popping up..with an X on it.

Is this what you guys are seeing? I got the 4100........sounds like I'm in the same boat.

Can someone send me the contents of the update so I can load it to another memory card?

That is EXACTLY what happened to me. TomTom wouldn't help me and sent me to Toyota. Toyota didn't know anything either & sent me back to TomTom. My dealership finally figures it out 7 1/2 hours later...

If you're getting the "Red 'X' of Death" you will need to get the updated disk (Ver 4200). The reason why you are getting the red "x" is that the application has become corrupted.

Btw, Toyota and Tomtom don't seem to communicate well with eachother. Talking to either one of them is a waste of time.

Getting a copy of the disk from someone will not help you as the file that has become corrupted is a non-copiable file - I don't now why, it just is.

My $.02 is to go to the dealer ASAP to get a new disk. And don't update the disk with Tomtom Home. It will ruin your disk. It even states on the Tomtom Home homepage that is does not support Tomtom Toyota (which we have.)

Good luck!

I just wanted to ask how the new card is doing? I finally got into my dealer on wednesday. I told them over the phone exactly what happened and what was needed....they said ok..bring it in. I bring it in and they take 1.5 hours to tell me exactly the same thing. WTF right? Ok...then they tell me that it'll take 3-5 days to get the new card in. After that...I can come back. Now..all the new cards are they 4200 right? Or do they still have the 4100 out there? Is there something specific to ask for? These service guys can be a real pain sometimes.

Does the new cards update ok when you plug in your tomtom?

Thanks guys!

I don't know if they are still issuing the 41XX cards, but the one I got was 42XX. One card is blue the other is black. I can't remeber which one is which...but if you have a card the says 41XX and it's blue, then the 42XX will be black or vice versa.
