Ok picked up my first 4 runner yesterday. Limited 4wd model. Haven't put a ton of miles on it yet. Maybe 70 miles all city driving here in Memphis. Coming from an 07 Outback with a 6cyl. Both were epa rated for 17 city so I was expecting mileage to be a wash. The electronics pretty consistently showed me getting 16.5 in the city on my outback but the last two days of driving the 4Runner I've been keeping an eye on it and it's saying I'm averaging 12.4. Do you think the electronics average is accurate or am I really using that much gas? I think I used to do better than that in my v8 tundra I had from 01-07. What should I realistically expect in the city from this thing? I'm a pretty restrained driver. It's not like I'm getting into the pedal or anything. I'm going to be a little disappointed if I'm really getting the mileage it's showing.

reset the display first, then then measure it manually over the first couple tanks and compare to the display

The average will increase after the first few tanks. Mine was 14ish on my first tank now its 20+
Don't trust that MPG computer. For instance, I towed a trailer for 300 miles and the MPG computer didn't recognize the drop in MPG till a couple tanks of fuel later, it was slow to respond to the change.

I just picked up a 2015 limited as well, 400 miles so far and I'm averaging 16.5, I drive like a grandpa too!!

Interesting... I had no idea the LE was available in 2wd. Even on Toyota's site, it doesn't allow a 2wd option.
I was in your situation a month ago. I have a Limited 4x4 with 3rd row. The first gas tank showed 12.5 MPG, even as I was babying the truck for the first couple hundred miles! NOBODY buys a 4R for its fuel saving capability, but that low fuel economy still scared me. I'm glad to say it does improve as the break-in period passes. I now have about 1,500 miles on the 4R and the computer shows an average of 17.9 - 18.0 MPG. I do maybe 30% highway, 70% city.

Chuck Hutton. I live in midtown so it's much easier to hop on I55 and get down there than to drive all the way out to the other. Plus it's locally owned not a satellite of a national chain. I did reset the computer today and drove about 38,39 miles in the city and the computer read 17.5mpg as I pulled back in my driveway just now. Maybe I can squeeze another 1mpg out of it after break in. I guess that 12.5 number was from loading and unloading and moving around the lot and test drives etc. Should at least be as good or slightly better than the outback I just traded. I did love that outback. It was a great car. Kind of wish I had kept it to give to my daughter next summer when she turns 16 but I wanted to save that sales tax and avoid insuring it all that time. I hate my wife's new one though. Just not as nice as the 7yo ll bean edition I had and the bigger size just didn't appeal to me either for a wagon.

well I did track the inventory starting back 1-nov-2013 up sometime in January-2014 in this thread starting at this post (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/140201-2014-4runner-45.html#post1521091). but then again you never posted in that thread during the whole time I was posting numbers either.
I tracked all the RWD and 4x4 variations.

I tested the accuracy of the MPG reading on various fillups. It appears to be VERY accurate, I was getting in the range of 1-2% error maximum compared to the actual gas pump reading, when filling up at the same pump, same spot.
I can also add that my fuel consumption for the first few tanks seemed worse than after the break-in.

Our 2014 Limited 4x4 started out in the low 17 mpg range the first few tanks.
We just passed 4,000 miles and we're now getting 18.8 in mixed driving. Reset it every tank and as it breaks in I guarantee it will climb.
note - we are at high altitude and therefore use 85 octane

I'm not penny pinching about mileage but it is somewhat important to me just from being a semi good steward of the environment. I wasn't about to buy a Prius but I looked at a gx460. The 2mpg difference was a bigger deal to me than the 10,000 price difference. I almost considered waiting a few months for the aluminum bodied f150 with the new ecoboost engine. The platinum f150's are nice! I've heard 20mpg city numbers being tossed around. Ultimately a real truck would have just felt awkward for driving my clients around to look at houses.
