Mine hovers around 22mpg at 70mph. I do a good bit of mountain driving on the interstate, so that puts a bit of variance in it. Pure highway driving on flat land (like through Ohio), I've seen as high as 24mpg on a tank.

The best I get is 16.5 when I do extended highway driving. My truck averages 15.5-15.9 (calculated by hand for the past 4 months) with 80-85% highway driving at 70-75 mph. I don't accelerate hard and I have headers and a flowmaster muffler (which should improve the mpg a little), as well as an AFE filter for better breathing. I do have 275 LT tires, so they are heavier, and I also consider the tire size when calculating the overall miles traveled since the speedo is calibrated for 265s. I fill up every 3-4 days at $70ish per tank....so you can see how much f'n money I am spending on gas alone.

That is an interesting point aboutthe tires. I am planning to get the off road package. Not sure which tires come with that and how they will affect mileage.
Do you mean the TE? It comes with the same highway tires that the SR5 and Limited come with. They certainly aren't lookers, but for simple offroading, they do fine. I've been very happy with the Bridgestones for highway driving. The Dunlops don't get very good reviews from the users here, though.
Right, the Trail Edition. So they don't come with off-road tires. Typical Toyota. They give you a good car with crappy tires (at least that happened to be before on a Toyota). I'll see if I can pay for an upgrade.
I just returned from a 645 mile rountrip from Los Angeles to Mammoth Lakes, which goes from sea level to roughly 7800 ft. I have 285/70-17 heavy LT tires and a 3" lift, and got 17.7mpg using the cruise set at exactly 70mph ( corrected for oversize tires). I also had a slight headwind in both directions (go figure). I found the 4R fuel milage with the 6cyl to be extremely sensitive to the slightest grade or headwind.

I am also seeing between 22 and 23 mpg gallon on hwy driving at 70. I have logged as high as 24.7 and as low as 21 but that was driving 80 mpg between Atlanta and Pensacola. I love my 4runner, I came out of a 2wd 2007 GMC Sierra which averaged around 18. By the way my 4runner is a 2wd also.
Winter is a ***** on fuel economy. In my 4 mile commute, my T4R is barely at operating temps by the time I hit the parking lot. I'm loitering around 20mpg in winter driving (pretty ideal, all 55mph, 1 stopsign at the end of my street, one stoplight where I turn in to my work's parking lot). Summer is much better at 22~23mpg on the same commute.

I've done this drive 4 times this year but I go on up to Northern NV. Stock tires.
24mpg is my best and 21mpg was the worst (winter gas).
BTW, I reset my meter on the hill down from Mammoth to Bishop
FWIW the meter goes as high as 60MPG
What does a lift ticket cost at Mammouth these days? As a kid a million years ago I paid $8!

With those that posted Highway mpgs at 20+... do you know how many miles were on the car when you started to achieve that? Do you notice the manufacturer of the gas making a difference (Hess, Citgo, Exxon). I have 900 miles on mine and first tank was about 17.9 dealer provided gas (about 400 miles on the OD). Second tank was 16.9 at BJs Warehouse ( about 700 on the OD). Third tank at Hess is averaging 19.4 (not finished with it yet). The driving habits are the same through all the tanks.
First few tanks were right at 20mpg. Once I got a couple thousand miles on it, it settled around 22mpg. My first tanks were in April and it was late May by the time I hit 2k miles.
I only run BP, Exxon, Shell, etc. The times I've been forced into a discount brand, I didn't really notice much of a difference in actual mpg. I think modern cars handle the discount gas a little better than before. My 2001 Impreza 2.5RS threw a fit with Go Mart gas on several occasions. I don't know if it was that particular tank or Go Mart's quality in general, but I've avoided it since and not had any issues with my Impreza, GTI (turbo), MINI (supercharged), or 4Runner. Certainly a lot more variables than just brand.

It can range from 17 to 20 mpg. 5000 miles on rig (Limited) and those number are based on 4 300 mile plus trips. I use Costco gas. Most of the driving is on concrete Interstate Highways.

I think $90. I use a value pass which pays for itself in 7 days of use, but still insanely expensive!

Detergent additives, percentage of ethanol in formulation, and other fun stuff that will hijack this thread. Spend a few hours on reading search results on the difference between brands like ARCO and CITGO, "top tier", and the impact of ethanol on MPG results.
I use Shell, Chevron, or 76. I'd suggest others do the same.
