Multi-Mode 4x4

Howdy,

1st post over here, been lurking and reading up the FAQ's but one thing is bugging me and I have no where to turn.

I just got a 2000 T4R LTD and have a question about the what I gather is the multi-mode 4x4. I read:

But I'm not confident I have it understood correctly.

Here's how I interpret it;

H2/H4 is 2wd
H2/H4 pushing button in on side of lever = 4wd with slip.

Here's where I get confused: I can either have H4L with out lever button pushed in or not…is there a difference?

4Lo= once again does the button pushed in make a difference?

As I have played around with it I find the dash indicator sometimes lights just all 4 wheels, sometimes a center orange (center lock diff?) light up.

Couple that with an elocker and I have more options than I know what to do with!

I know the elocker and 4Lo will only be used to crawl up gnarley paths with lots of slip so not to break CV's etc. but the idea of a lever AND a button activating different styles of 4x4 is confusing me.

Thanks for putting up wiht what I figure is a fundemental question but I know I can do some damage if I don't get it right.

from what I understand, H2/H4 is AWD when button is pushed, H4L locks the center diff. when the center diff light is on, the diff is locked, just green wheels is awd

But what about the button in H4L or 4Lo..? it seems redundant and I don't want to play around on hard streets to work it out…I forget exactly what was happening, in regards to the dash light, as I was pushing and pulling all the buttons and levers on the trail.

It's that danged button! I cant figure out!

Push the button....go into AWD. Push the lever into 4L with or without button pushed ur in 4wd. While in 4lo push center tcase lock button on dash and ur in true 4Lo. The button is just an easy way to toss it into AWD mode for rainy or slippery street driving. 4 green wheels on dash means you are in some form of AWD or 4wd ....the orange circle indicates you have center locked. Hope this helps

But...

I don't have a center tcase button on dash…an elocker to the left of steering column but no other switches buttons that relate to 4x4 that I can figure.

Elocker is just the rear locker right? Does no effect the center diff? The center orange light did go on at one point… I think H4L..

I'll take better notes next time

It's 2000 Limited with the wood grain interior/leather….

What does your dash button look like? Does it say RR DiFF Lock? Not saying you dont know just some people dont or get confused and that is also a rare combo

push button for AWD, shift to 4H(L) for regular 4wd shift to 4Lo for low range...

Yep it says RR Diff Lock. I wasn't sure…I looked a bunch of T4Rs and I thought some just said elocker or I started to just assume that what it was/is based on reading some stuff here. (That whole thing about a little knowledge being dangerous like Mamma said and all..)

RR Diff Lock=elocker….right?

Last 4x4 I spent any time with was an old school, shift and get out and lock the hubs so all this "auto" stuff is confusing.

Yes RR Diff Lock = eLocker

So you have, AWD, 4x4, and a locker. Got it now. Good truck for most anything you will run in So-Cal my friend.

It all made sense 'cept for that button….

I got out on a trail today and ran in H4L for ~ 15 minutes just to get the gear oil moving. Seems to respond well.
