My $760 T4R "Build" (2000 SR5 3.4 5 speed Desert Dune)

First of all: jesus christ you lucky SOB I'm so god damn jealous. Anything NEAR that quality is at least 2.5 - 3K in Berta'.

Second - not sure if you've touched the rear LCAs yet, and this is kind of a cheap plug on my part - but if you want some replacements I had some stupid mix up at a shop and am now stuck with new left and right rear LCAs (w/ bushings). I saw you put the odo in KMs so I assume you're also Canadian!

Oh also for the steering rack - do you think a 99' 4Runner rack on a 2000 would work?

Great find dude!

I'm actually based out of Edmonton. Was just working east of Toronto for the summer. Currently en route back west. 3700km drive to put this truck through it's paces. lol I'm also getting pretty awesome fuel mileage! Even with the load range E tires and the truck being loaded to the roof I'm seeing 10.3l/100kms (23mpg)

Hah that's actually part of the reason I jumped on this truck before my Ram was sold...knew I could flip it pretty easily out west for a healthy profit if I needed to.

I might take you up on those LCA's...depends how the out of province inspection goes.

I'm pretty certain the racks from all 3rd gens are compatible.

I had the same noise issue after my autotransmission was replaced. Solved it by using RTV/silicone seal on some high density packing foam to seal around the shifters and body. Cut up an old yoga matt for the sound barrier...oversize it so you have plenty of area to apply RTV and glue it to the outside of vehicle.

Been tinkering away at some things over the past few months. Completed a projector retrofit before christmas.

Morimoto Mini D2S 35w 4800k ...it made the 7000+ km's worth of driving I did over the holidays somewhat bearable.

Crappy wet weather had me wishing our trucks came equipped with headlight washers...which has led me onto my current retrofit project. I stopped by my local pick 'n pull to see if I could salvage a simple headlight washer system out of an older vehicle. Found this 97 Mitsubishi Pajero :guitar3:

(Ive got another thread dedicated to the washer retrofit as well)

There was also a 2000 4runner there that I snaked a few goodies off.

Complete headlight washer system including tank and pump, 4runner grill, rear coolant lines, roof rack delete strips, two piece skid, and the license plate bezel with latch release. ALL FOR $80! Gosh I love junk yards:canada:

I was excited to pull my roof rack off. Hopefully will give a tiny bump in Hwy fuel economy. I little bit of silicone around the bolt holes and I shouldn't have a problem with leaks.

I will get to tinkering with the headlight washer system later. Ordered a new pump from China as the old one was leaking. Gotta figure out a solution for the reservoir...

Hi there CNDsldr - very nice & affordable SR5 build / interesting thread.
- like how you had some fun bartering the purchase price

BTW - smart move on the Dodge RAM, money pits when warranty runs out.
- the Hemi engines even worse, components under designed to fail

FYI - I'm South of London, ON.
And have found that DuraShield wax-oil undercoating spray, doesn't wash off.
- all I use now, to stop or drastically slow down rust
Cheers, Larry

Thanks Larry!

The days of throwing the latest and greatest, expensive aftermarket toys into a vehicle are long gone!

Thanks for the tip on the undercoating, I'll definitely look into that. I'm waiting for summer to come around before I put some serious elbow grease into her. There are a few rust bubbles starting at the leading edge of the hood, around the windshield frame and under the mirror mounts that I need to address as well. She's no show truck so I figure sanding/grinding the rust away with some colour matched spray bomb will do the trick.

Agree ^^ I prefer the improved/original builds, nothing to crazy.
- and a fan of ~1967 GM muscle cars, with original body & interior / plus disk brake conversion & 350 over 283-v8...hehe

A few DYI, body work TIPS - used on my John Deere 318 snow blower, drift cutter build:
- best paint remover is CIRCA 1850 furniture stripper (buy at Home Hardware) / liquid mixed 4-1 with jell work very well
- wire brush on electric drill &/or sandblast rusted metal clean
- degrease bare metal, 3M break cleaner will work
- minute rust pits are hard to totally eliminate & will haunt a repaint later
- EXTEND is a phosphate coating to neutralize rust particles / buy at AutoZone...awesome stuff, I've used for decades
- the self etching primer as pictured, is good & durable stuff (purchased at NAPA/UAP)
- sorry, but the can of black Tremclad paint (on right), lacks toughness

LOCTITE® EXTEND RUST NEUTRALIZER Paint Over Rust with Extend Rust Neutralizer from Loctite Adhesives
Loctite® Extend Rust Neutralizer is a fast drying, milky white latex coating that is applied to rusted metal to stop rust, protect the surface and act as a primer for the finish coat. It converts rust to a neutral surface ready for painting, creating the ability to paint over rust.

Finally got around to installing some of the junkyard finds I took home a while ago.

Sandbasted, painted, and installed the rear coolant lines.

Old ones were rusted beyond belief.

Also cleaned up the skid plates I brought home. Replaced my rusted out one with a slightly less rusted plate...lol and I gained the rear plate back :)

Also installed the rear license plate bezel.

My old one had a few issues:
The top seal was warped, allowing water to get in behind,
Return spring for the hatch release wasn't working, and
The screws for one of the license plate lights was stripped and seized, so I couldn't change that bulb.

It was nice to see all the fluid film I applied in the summer was still in place on the inner hatch. Generously applied more to everything corroded.

Replaced the rear O2 sensor a couple weeks ago. One stud was already snapped, and the second went like a twizzler. This exhaust is on its last legs so I wasn't overly concerned welding it on. Would be easy enough to grind/drill it out to transfer to a new exhaust.

I've only welded a handful of times....dont judge :P

Polishing a Turd!

I scored an orbital polisher on Kijiji (Canada's version of craigslist, but less creepy) for $20 yesterday evening. It's a fairly crappy Simoniz 10". Not overly powerful and the motor slows down severely with the slightest amount of pressure. Anyways, was only $20 so oh well.

Ive never detailed a vehicle before aside from the basics, so this was a bit of a learning experience! haha I picked up some supplies from Canadian Tire. I went for the whole nine yards.

Clay bar kit, polishing compound, and wax. ...in hindsight, this polish was a PIA! The paste is annoying to work with and dries reeeeally fast. In the future I'll be looking for something much more abrasive. It didn't really provide the result I was looking for. The clay bar kit and wax were good!

Here are some before and afters...

Lot's of little specks of oxidation

and AFTER!

Didn't remove all the little specks...but a definite improvement

I was most disappointed that it didn't get these swirl marks out. I think a more aggressive compound is needed.

Not much improvement here either

Out in the light, this little turd looks pretty good!

Im convinced one of the previous owners was fairly meticulous with detailing. Considering how good of shape the body is in for a 17 year old Canadian truck. As well, I didn't find the clay bar took as much off the paint as I was expecting. It seemed fairly clean to begin with.

It's nice to see my Frankenstein CV repair is holding together!

Awesome find for $760 with a 5 Spd!
A buddy bought a 3VZ 5 Spd a 3 years ago from North Vancouver in great shape with low KM's---- it had been sitting in a carport for 5 yrs, barely used, the older couple that owned it said the kids had moved and they decided to buy a Suby for a second car, so they needed it gone. He paid $5k with the 90's swooping decals on the sides...
These trucks, in the Vancouver area, have very little rust, therefore, they sell for high prices. Right now, a 4R in relatively good shape, in Vancouver, will run $4-6K, one in really nice shape, more.

I love wreckers! There are absolutely no 3rd gen 4Runners at any of the Pick and Pulls where I live, or Van. for that matter. Good find on the parts!
After the brutal Winter we've had in the Okanagan, I'm waiting to see your headlight washer mod! I'm considering doing a projector mod--- I was impressed with your pic showing the light thrown by yours!

Good luck, subscribed!

Kaizen Auto on Mitchell Island was sucking them all up as they became available and he charges sky high prices. However, AABC auto parts just on the east end of Mitchell Island (they had that big fire on the news a few weeks ago, the day after I went there) is getting 4runners come through, I managed to get some great deals recently. Mint condition full rear axle with locker for $350!!!! Next I want a new gas tank skid plate, mine is all rusted to he!!.

Also there is a wrecker in Langley that apparently has 25 4runners.

My trucks big problem is the rust on the undercarriage. I *think* it looks worse than it is, mostly due to some rubberized undercoating that was applied several years ago. It's all cracked, flaking, and curling up; so it looks really nasty under there. That will be my next major project.

I absolutely love these engines though! I do 10,000km oil changes and she doesnt burn a drop, at least no recognizable change on the dip stick. I just rolled over 320k km's

I was shocked to find a 3rd gen in the pick and pull. It was fairly intact as well. Not for long though...there were lots of vultures picking at it the few days I was there and funny enough, I went back a few days ago and it's gone! Lady at the front desk said they crushed it. WTF!?

I haven't had much chance to work on the headlight washer mod. I think Ive decided on stuffing the Mitsubishi reservoir in the passenger side fender. Im going to have to do some dremeling/trimming to the sheet metal on the engine side of the fender to make it fit...and I need a new antenna (tacoma mod). I tried to remove it nicely to make as much room for the reservoir, but of course the crown nut is seized and disintegrates....so I become less gentle.. hah

Might work on it tomorrow.

Now you need to do something aboot those rims!!!!

Ughhh yeah i know!! Ive been cruising kijiji looking for options. Either the 5 spoke 16" that came on 01/02's or the Tundra/sequoia 17", preferably the gun metal. Both will clear the TBU, which will come in the future.

Ive also been considering new take off 17" Trail team edition's. Seen a few ad's for $1200. Not too bad for nearly new rubber and rim. Problem is most of the good stuff is down in Calgary.

I visited Kaizen Auto myself last Spring looking for some rims, and at the time, he had 3 4Runners---- I was able to look at them but they had to do the removal, and his prices were STUPID. He wanted $400 for 2002 LTD 5-stars, they weren't even in that great a condition!

The fun in going to a wrecker, aside from saving $$, is looking for an item and coming away with 4! When you're there, ideas flow, and in the case of my sons' Eclipse, practice--- and discovery of an easier way to do something! Last Spring Michell Island was a bust for me... maybe this Spring when I come down for the car show, I'll have a look at AABC. Are they a "pull your own" place?

Great deal on the rear end. I'd love a locker myself, as it would be nice on the boat launches--- I hate spinning my tire on a sandy ramp, 4x4 works, but the locker would be better....

Please reveal this mythical yard in Langley!! I stay in Langley when I roll into town (family), and I know Langley well(lived in Fort Langley for 8 yrs)---- I would love to score a few items!!!

Rust, a weakness of our 4Runners. I think you said yours was from Ont. I've had some experience with Eastern vehicles. Almost 2 years ago my son bought a Mits Eclipse, it looked in good shape, it had low Km's and it was cheap. It was originally from Ont. I figured it was a good project for him, and I did notice a little rust. The following Spring, we stripped the car down as much as possible, gave him some goggles, air wire wheel and placed it high on jack stands. He (and I) spent the next week cleaning the undercarriage as much as possible (replaced some things that were rusted ie clamps on the fuel lines) then did the 2 stage treatment with POR15. Its messy by it works great. We also did the engine bay. He also got some exposure to body work--- the front bumper cover needed some repair. After that job, we went to the Pick N' Pull in Kelowna and pulled the entire rear suspension off a V6 model with rear disc brakes (his had drum), we rebuilt it all and installed it on his car. He learned alot, and I got a 20T press!

I'm a regular at the Pick N' Pull in Kelowna, and I've been pretty diligent watching for a 3rd gen---- in the 4-5 yrs I've been watching, not one has shown up! This yard usually keeps the vehicles on site for at least 3 mos. and they track larger parts and if parts are coming off a specific model, they'll delay crushing them.... thats a shame about that 4R!

My youngest will be going the College soon, so to restore the 97 Corolla we have, I found a beauty at the Pick N' Pull in Kelowna. It was in way better shape than ours!! I can only guess the tranny went... I stripped that car!! It had the same colour interior--- a few parts-- check! It had newish front struts (I dropped the entire front suspension including the CV's) and good rears--- I came back for those a week later, I also took the entire rear suspension, starter, alt, PS pump with lines, 4 good tires---- check. <$500 total!! Our Corolla now has a new lease on life and will last, at least through his College term! Did I mention I love Pick N' Pull's??

Good luck and post picks of that washer mod, when its done!

A quick rip down from E-Town for some rims isn't too bad! I had a brief period where I was commuting daily to Red Deer in my Tacoma.

Try convincing someone to ship something to the Yukon! That usually kills any deals I find!

Kaizen wants $1500 for a complete rear axle! Ridiculous

Here is one on Craigslist where you might get the rear axle:

https://vancouver.craigslist.ca/van/pts/5977176095.html

That yard in Langley is Gateway Auto Wrecking.

If you find a non-rusted gas tank skid plate let me know, I'm keeping my eyes open.

AABC are pretty much "pull your own", you basically just look at the ones they have lying around and let them know what you want, then go take it off yourself or they will do it for you if it's too hard. They are really helpful. They say the transmissions and engines are already sold, they go to Nigeria, but the rest of the car is up for grabs.

I think all the runners written off in BC or maybe all of western Canada go to Mitchell Island via ICBC, the wreckers have contracts with them, that's why you don't see them anywhere else. Kaizen gets most of them but there are a few others like AABC. Or on your next trip to the USA there are tons of places down there with the.

Washer mod nearly complete!

I spent the better part of the day tinkering on this washer retrofit.

Had to cut out a little more sheet metal than I was hoping for...and Im currently unable to re-install the cruise control module due to the location of the filler neck. Might have to fab up a skinnier elbow.

Anyways, on to the good stuff!

I was unable to thread the plastic collar on to the underside, due to one of the bumper support brackets being butt up against where I drilled, so these are more just "pressed" in right now. Will have to grind out more metal to get them secured properly.

The driver side nozzle has a lot of bubbling rust under the rubber, so its deforming it and not allowing it to sit nicely on the gasket. Im going to check ebay and see if I can get some replacement nozzles for a decent price.

And video!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cu6ysjvfqOc&feature=youtu.be

Not sure how to imbed the video, but Im sure you all are bright enough to follow the link ;)

The fender liner was a little difficult to get back in. It is tight up against the bottom of the reservoir. I was unable to get the hole lined up from the grommet directly behind the pump.

They are aimed a little low... with a small screwdriver I aimed the little nozzles as far up as they can go. I may drill the holes a little farther forward to try and correct the trajectory, but they should still work well as is.

This pump spits out a ton of volume! Much more than a standard washer pump. I bet it would drain the entire tank in around 30 seconds.
