My $760 T4R "Build" (2000 SR5 3.4 5 speed Desert Dune)

Im headed 1100 km's (one way) to Montana later this week and I should be able to give it a test run. Weather is forecasted to be above freezing so it should be sloppy.

Just gotta finish up the wiring, (in-line fuse, and switch on the ground side..don't want to mess with a relay at this point) and button a few things up.

Kaizen wants $1500 for a complete rear axle! Ridiculous

Here is one on Craigslist where you might get the rear axle:

https://vancouver.craigslist.ca/van/pts/5977176095.html

That yard in Langley is Gateway Auto Wrecking.

If you find a non-rusted gas tank skid plate let me know, I'm keeping my eyes open.

AABC are pretty much "pull your own", you basically just look at the ones they have lying around and let them know what you want, then go take it off yourself or they will do it for you if it's too hard. They are really helpful. They say the transmissions and engines are already sold, they go to Nigeria, but the rest of the car is up for grabs.

I think all the runners written off in BC or maybe all of western Canada go to Mitchell Island via ICBC, the wreckers have contracts with them, that's why you don't see them anywhere else. Kaizen gets most of them but there are a few others like AABC. Or on your next trip to the USA there are tons of places down there with the.

$1500 is crazy!
Thanks for the link. Gateway is less than 10 min from my Sister's place! I'll definitely be checking it out, next time in town. Sounds like my kind of place: "pull your own"! When I drop by, if I see a tank skid plate, I'll let you know.
Surprised to hear all engines and transmissions are sold! I would think they'd get more money for them domestically--- I'm always hearing of guys looking for engines and to a lesser extent trannys. I myself needed an engine back in 2012, I couldn't find a decent one locally for a reasonable price---- I ended up going JDM. I have heard that specific models go overseas and these vehicles either are repaired or combined (at a ridiculously cheap labour rate) to be re-sold across Africa or South America.

It's disappointing that a few wreckers have agreements with ICBC. Down in the States, I understand most of the States insurance companies have open auctions for write-offs. I believe that's where Singtoe got his donor Sequoia for his 4.7L V8 swap to a 3rd GEN!
There are lots of members that have acquired donors, down South. Don't know why ICBC doesn't do this.

I also have a Celica that I'm considering doing a rear brake swap. I'll check them out for that too.

Thanks again for the info! I'll keep in touch!

Major score today! Picked up some near new Trail Edition take off wheels and tires. 265 70 17.

Only $400, all other ads I saw people wanted $1k+

According to the tire calculators I've used it's nearly identical to 265 75 16..technically the 17's are less than .1" smaller. However, the OEM 265 70 17's are actually a tiny bit taller than my Grabber AT2's.

Time to ditch these ugly wheels!

Contact patch is over an inch more narrow

So much nicer!

damn she looks good with thte new trail wheels

i want a set :cry2:

Just keep an eye on the classifieds! I bought these 45 min after he posted them online. Lot's of people upgrade right from the dealer and don't really know the value of these. Just looking to get them out of their garage.

Im really digging these new wheels.

I crunched some numbers to make sure the math was on my side..

Old set-up

16" split spoke - 22.2lbs
Grabber AT2 - 57 lbs

Total - 79.2lbs

New

17" Trail edition - 32lbs
Dueler H/T 39lbs

Total 71lbs

So, in short I'm saving around 8.2lbs per wheel/tire worth of unsprung, rotational mass. Combined with less rolling resistance, this should lead to some fuel savings, not to mention some more ride comfort moving back to a P rated tire from LT.

Pulled the running boards off yesterday after I noticed some rust developing around the pinch welds. There is a little more rust at the front of the rear wheel wells than I was hoping for. :(

For the time being a used some rust converter followed by red oxide primer and a top coat of white spray paint I had lying around. Wasn't over worried about aesthetics, as this area is not overly visible. Just need to slow it down until I can repair it properly. Gahh I hate body work! Would gladly doing anything else mechanical 10x over before body work! Im a little too OCD and not nearly skilled enough to make it look satisfying.

Will need to spend some quality time with a wire wheel and grinder to remove all the cancer.

On a side note, I really do like the practical application of running boards. Im in the habit of using them to step up and sit down to bang the snow off my shoes before tracking it onto the mats.

As well, they prevent a lot of wear and tear on the rocker panels from gravel being kicked up etc.

Not from what I remember. They all came out fairly easily with the exception of one. I believe I used a deep socket to pound them out.
Whaaa! I had to cut the lower control arms from my uncles 06 tacoma since the bolts cam bolts were seized in the lca.

You might want to have a look behind those fender flares, I took mine off (exact same ones) last week. Lots of grit eating into the paint.

Re: running boards, I think a set of rock sliders + mud flaps would accomplish the same thing and not rub your paint off.

Exactly!!! Love mine...last thing I would change

This is a duplicate post of what I posted in my dedicated headlight washer retrofit thread...just for my own organizational purposes lol

Finally got to actually test out the functionality of the washer retrofit! Got some really heavy, wet snow yesterday.

After only a few minutes of driving, this was the result.

After a few blasts of the washer jets going around 80kmh (50mph), the washer jets did a nice job of basting a lot of the slush away. Going to tinker with the aim a little bit more to make it perfect.

Im pretty damn satisfied! I can imagine driving through this stuff at night would make the headlights near useless within a few minutes. With all the long distance driving I do, this is a worthwhile upgrade!

Small update on "Franken-boot"..

In total I ran around 3000km's with this repair. I finally got around to installing the OEM boot kit last weekend.

Franken-boot held up absolutely wonderfully!! The vinyl cement I used, bonded perfectly, and even held the horizontal seam together.

Upon cutting the outer rubber off, revealed that the wire repair held up perfectly. No grease seeping through!

I didn't get and photos of the rebooted shafts, but I was able to sandblast and painted them, so they turned out a little more pretty! lol

Been doing lots of work on ol Trusty Rusty!

Gave her a nice detailed wash and wax. Always love how this paint still shines even with a crappy orbital polisher.

POR15ed the pinch weld area before re-installing the running boards.

Ordering up some Whiteline Poly bushings for the rear LCA's and panhard bar.
It sucks how much we get ripped off up here in Canada!

Ordered up new rear bumpers from RockAuto. They'll be getting colour matched with powder coating.

Took this opportunity to pull my rusted bumper, hitch, and clean up the mounts and everything thats normally hidden.

Also made these inserts for the rear frame section. The hitch will bolt up to the welded nuts.

Just completed the TBU with RockAutos "Powerstop" kit. Probably the best price around! (Especially for Canadians...$350CAD ones the cores are returned)
