My '87 Daily driver

Not yet :(
If I can get that rocker trim piece off, I think I can fix it. I've looked for months now and cannot find a replacement or a way to take it off without breaking the clips. Not sure what I'll do, I ned to repair all four of my wheel well opening trim too.

I've heard that the clips are basically meant to break.

I got a set of used trim on eBay many months ago and bought new clips from a Toyota dealer online.

I got my truck without the stainless trim, but the holes and some clip remnants were there, so I tracked down some originals.

No idea how they came off in the first place. It probably wasn't pretty.

I would assume a plastic trim removal tool set would be required if you didn't want to eff up your finish.

Would you happen to know if the 3rd gen brakes would work? Bolt pattern is all the same but is there any difference in calliper or any other of the brake components sizes from the 2nd to 3rd gen?

I cannot speak to that, but do a little searching on this site, I'm sure your answer is here somewhere. I don't have any experience with a 3rd gen.

I did buy new calipers and hub service kits today. The plan is to pull the entire front end part this weekend and swap diffs, new brakes, wheel bearings, and auto to manual hub swap this weekend. And bolt up the new wheels and tires.
 
My weekend was cut short so I took today off work to finish the swap, but that didn't happen after a family issue took most of my time today. I did get the rearend rebuilt with all new bearings, seals, brakes, and the 4.88 diff. The new front diff is in, axle studs replaced with bolts, new wheel bearings, rotor, and manual hub swap is done on the drivers side. Just found out I need to grind the backing plates a little to fit the V6 caliper, but once done, that side will be ready for the wheel and tire. Hope to do the passenger side tomorrow or Wednesday evening and get the V6 master and booster bolted on. It looks badass with the new cooper Maxx tires, I can't wait to get it going again!
 
Cool thread! I just bought the same truck and have enjoyed reading about yours. I'll be interested in seeing how the engine swap goes!
 
I finally got it together tonight. Had a ***** of a time bleeding the brakes, in the end, I think I had an air pocket in the new master cylinder. I haven't driven it yet, just put my tools away now and have to up at 3:30am for work. Tomorrow I will adjust the steering stops and run it around town. The wheels and tires look killer, but the front wheel caps cover my new manual hubs. Not sure if I like that or not, looks modern and won't be difficult to remove to lock them, but I like the hubs exposed. Anyway, updates and pics to come by this weekend.
 
Here's the goods from this week, new 4.88 diffs, axle and wheel bearings, seals, front and rear brakes, dual diaphragm booster master cylinder, Asisn manual hub swap, 17" FJ cruiser limited wheels, and 255/80/17 Cooper STT Maxx tires.

My fun was short lived, the new axle seal on the passenger side rear is leaking. The brake shoes saturated and trying to lock up, it's back on the jack stands for a while, lol
 
Put in new rear axle seals from Marlin Crawler, brake shoes again, and turned the rotors at the beginning on this week. Drove it the last few days and all is well, that V6 booster really helps, these brakes are awesome!
 
nice looking ride. i kind of like the locking hubs "exposed" look better.

funny about the rocker trim. mine just pops out easily on either side using no tools. and i scored a set of the clips from craigslist last month, along with a few other 4runner goodies (manual locking hubs - 3, auto hubs - 2, rear window lower channel/guide, a bunch of trim and misc fasteners & clips, a spare ecu, nearly new exaust from after the cat, starter, etc) - all for $120. oh, and the windshield corner trim, along with ALL of the windshield clips/fasteners/retainers - brand new toyota in packaging.

I did pick up nice replacement rocker moulding and clips a couple weeks ago, the clips didn't come with the plastic rubber deals that go into the body holes before the trim with the clips go on though, not sure where to get any either. Without those, I think there might be extra gap once installed and I don't want it to rattle. I'll figure out something, maybe thick tape?
Otherwise I just need a nice replacement rear bumper with a left corner piece and a nice dash pad as mines cracked by the altimeter.
Going to pick up another top on CL tomorrow to cut up for a half top.
