there's a (graphite-i think) spiral wound gasket at all the exhaust flanges. one from cat to muffler and one from muffler to tailpipe.

mine are also all disentergrated and I have gasses leaking from those locations, too.

I think it's giving me P0420, but my milage is still good even with all that exhaust trouble I have.
 
On my phone but it is a Toyota OEM part that goes between the two exhaust piece flanges.

Yeah. What's your deal with the mileage? Like I said, I drive hard here on WV and get 17-18. It's hilly as hell here. And stop and go. And I have some road rage.

They are like $8 at the dealer. Worth not breathing in the fumes.
 
I don't have any exhaust smell. I always thought it was welded at those joints, figured there was a gasket at the Y pipe where the cat pipe bolts up. I'll grab gaskets, I'm going to swap the cat and replace the muffler anyway so I'll do these while it's apart too.
 
dealer has 'em and so do most parts houses'. There is also a gasket at the collector to(going to cat). Might as well replace all of 'em, with the exception of the header gaskets.

Word of advice you likely don't need Wear some safety glasses/googles when your working on the exhaust. At the very LEAST don't work on it right over your head.

The reason I haven't taken care of all my exhaust issues is the last time I pulled the pipes apart I got a good dusting of rust/metal flakes in my left eye. Like a dumbass, I didn't do anything about it right away thinking "ahh, it will work itself out soon". The next day I had to have minor surgery to remove all the metal from my eye. I didn't do any permanent damage, but the Dr. said I just got really lucky. So, don't **** around with metal dust. **** gets real, real quick.
 
I've done exhaust work before, that rust makes a mess. Thanks for the heads up though. Glad your eye turned out okay. I'm going to have everything from the collector back off of it anyway so I'll replace them from there back. Definitely not messing with them at the exhaust manifolds though unless I absolutely have to.
 
I am sure you have already thought of this, but you don't always get your gas at the same place, do you? Not even trying to be funny, I was thinking about your lackluster mileage.
 
No, I don't but that is a good point.

This might sound crazy but, the other day I put it in 4WD, went about a block, put it in Park, shifted the TC to Neutral, than back to Hi and turned the 4WD back off. Took off again and it seemed to roll a lot easier than it use to. I have to check the mileage when I gas up again to see if it was just in my head or not. We'll see.
 
That does sound crazy. However, if your stats come back with a positive response, then we will accept your craziness.
 
Regarding your gas issue. I filled up today for the first full tank after adding ARB and winch. Along with cleaning TB and changing plugs and wires. Got 11.9 mpg. And I reset EFI. Seems to be a sort of common theme, change plugs and wires get crappy gas mileage.

I'm finding that mine is harder on fuel as well..... :(
 
What you guys have to remember is that when you reset the computer, you loose all of the adaptive strategy for fuel management. Its going to run a bit rich until the computer can find a leaner air/fuel mix that works for your elevation/temprature/ect. For some vehicles this can be done in as little as 10 miles, some take 1000 miles. Every vehicle is different, not to mention the time of year it is, where temperature can vary 10-20 degree's throughout the day and the barometric pressure with it. The vehicles computer has a lot of calculations to do that people dont realise. Resetting your ecu removes all of these calculations and makes it start all over again.

I think we are ruining PBR build thread. And turning it into a discussion. Myself included.

However, I have ran 700 miles with new plugs and wires, just wasn't filling all the way up before. I guess I didn't state that, but that should be enough to reset the EFI to where it needs to be.

I am guessing the EFI works through some sort of smallest error square formula, like a decline curve. It tries to match the amount of fuel needed to the o2 sensor (first one) and then continues to "train" itself until these two values match.

You should be able to hone in on the optimal fuel ration within a very short distance mileage wise, and them from there the error is decreasing with each additional mile difference. This does not equate to a 7 MPG difference.

I don't know whether I prefer clean or dirty. But, both extremes make me smile...:)
 
Awesome find, love the work you've put into this rig!

Quick question for you, since I'm looking to go down the same road with my '96...

What is the height from floor to fender with the new '99 springs and shocks? I'm trying to determine if I have a lift already on this rig. :)
 
Nice build so far. You should spray your lower front bumper valence with some trim paint like SEM, it's looking really faded in that pic.
