My budget build 3rd Gen

Pitbull - great looking 4R.
I'm looking to do something along the same lines as you. I don't have too much of a budget and not looking to get crazy. I live just outside of Philly as well, in Ardmore.
Did the 99 tall springs give you any lift? I'm considering doing OME 881 and 906's. If I sell off my dual sport, I should have about 2k for everything: lift, tires, finish radio.

I netted almost 2" with the '99 talls because my stock suspension was so shot. What are you starting with though? What year, how many miles, etc?

If you do 881's, I'd do 890's in the back as opposed to 906's.

What are you intentions with your 4Runner? Mine is a daily driver, not off-roaded, just a very capable driver. Lifted with big tires is cool but can hinder your drivability, gas mileage, parking options (garages) etc.

Pitbull, I didn't see it mentioned earlier in your thread, but did you take height measurements from your old suspension compared to your current tall/hd billy set up? I, too, would like to update my suspension components and I don't need anything for serious wheeling. Just wondering how much height you gained
 
The first tank after the O2 sensor change out it picked up a lot but it was all highway so not a great benchmark. My gas mileage SUCKS! I get about 14.5 MPG's and I'm on stock size tires. I'm 34 years old, I don't drive it hard. I just tried the EFI reset trick. I'll report back next time I put gas in it. So far it looks better though on the gauge.

Madbomber, I didn't measure but eyeing it up it gained close to 2". But my stock suspension was shot to hell.
 
I picked up an extremely clean 96 SR5 with 163k on the clock, e-locker. The person that owned it before me kept every record since 1998 and the thing doesn't have any squeak or rattle. This is my DD and I'm hoping to do some light trail duty with it. Like you, I have a 6 year old boy and my 3 year old wants to come as well. I'll throw my dirtbike on the single bike carrier as well from time to time.
You have a point about parking garages, my wife drives the 4R as well....she may not check heights before going in!

Sounds like doing the tall springs may be a good way to get a little higher and maybe add some air bags to help with the weight of the bike. I'm not positive about tire size, I was thinking of going up a size to help fill in the wheel well.

I'm hoping to get out and do some easy trails. Not looking to mess up the truck but wouldn't mind having some fun. I was going to do the Blue (or is it grey) wire for the locker and I understand I should alter the breather tube in the back too.

Your 'Runner is coming along nicely man. This build always reminds me of how much I could be saving lol. Looking forward to see what's next.

That is terrible. I drive like an ass hole, around a whole bunch of ass holes, and get 17.5 mpg.

Yeah, it blows. The only other thing I can think of is that the muffler has a few pinholes so there's a small exhaust leak and maybe the cat is clogged up. I don't know.

I'm going to replace the cat and muffler and hope it picks up. I really don't know what else to do.

yeah, that's a big thing for me. I work in center city 2 days/week and have to park it in a garage. It barely fits as is. I could do 265/75/16's and still be okay but that's about it. I just don't want to go with bigger tires until I get this mileage thing figured out.

I don't want to be a debbie downer, but I have so many exhaust leaks that the 2Runner whistles anytime I get over ~2800 rpm and I still get 17-18 in town and up to like 23 on highway. I don't think a few pinholes would be your problem. But, I remember you've tried it all with still no luck. So, I don't really know why im posting this because I still don't have any good advice for you. But as always your rig looks good, and best of luck to you.

Haha, all good, thanks man. I'm really out of ideas too. I love this thing though so I'll figure it out.
 
This might sound nuts, but it's worth a shot. Have you had the entire intake off, and looked through it real good?

I say this because, a friend of mine had a '96 4Runner that was getting crap gas mileage, had about 190k on the rig. I took the intake apart to do some stuff, and found one of those "Tornado" fuel saver things wedged SIDEWAYS in the intake tube. Damn truck could barely breath.

I doubt this is your problem, but it wouldn't it be funny if it was. :roadkill:

I had the inlet tube off when I cleaned the TB and MAF I've never had the manifold off. I should point out too, it runs great. Just horrible MPG's.

Good thought though.

It does have a bit of a pinion bearing noise too. I'm sure that doesn't help but I doubt that it causing it.
 
For what its worth I was missing one of the muffler gaskets when I got mine and was getting crap mileage. I think I already mentioned that before though.
