My Budget Retrofit

Working with a friend, I would measure the voltage running back to the marker lights when the brake lights are off and on and also on for extended time. You are looking for a voltage differential at the marker light. I would also double check my ground connections to make sure you're not shorting to ground.

The Halos, which are controlled by a chip, may have an overload/short prevention shut-off feature that when too much voltage goes to them for a period of time they turn off to keep from frying the diodes.

Also, what year is your 4Runner? Does it require CANBUS bulbs?

Thanks dude, I'll dig into it this week. For now, it doesn't bother me TOO much, but i just want these things to work.

EDIT: 99 SR5, I didn't think any of the 4runners (all gens) use canbus.

I have a 99 SR5 as well and upgraded all of my bulbs to LEDs with the exception of the license plate lamps.

I wired my halos to the marker lights via a relay that I use to toggle the ground to the halos. Halos on with the markers lamps, off when the headlamps go on; the positive is constant hot. I posted a thread about it a while back if you're interested.

I remember reading your thread about it. I may have to use a relay, I was just looking for the easiest way to go about it.

With the license plate lights, I had to go back to halogen because the LEDs I put in were flickering.

Driver's side headlamp

Alright, so when I was installing my headlights, I noticed that the black housing that the headlamp assembly is set inside had all of the white adjustment pieces completely locked up (passenger's side). So I happened to have an extra TYC black housing piece lying around and used that.

Well, I'm having to order a new headlight housing on the drivers side because it is broken now (the part that snaps into the black piece has broken off and my headlight is just bouncing around). So, I figured that if I'm going to be doing more headlight work...might as well fix both sides, so do you guys know of any place that I can order just the black piece?

Okay, so I clearly didn't really try hard enough, found the part number for that housing piece, 81106-35211 (D). If anybody else needs it...Partznet has it for $52, Amazon $59, and if people like camelback - $56. Price should be around the same for 81105-35231 (P).

Are you referring to the little black socket that snaps in on top? If so, I've been through that plenty and I used to just JB weld the dickens out of it and didnt have any problems.

Just tonight actually, I was working on my new retrofit and my new housings were missing that little piece. I just bought one of the ball sockets from TRS and cut it up till it fit in the square and JB welded it. $10 for JB weld and the socket sure beats $50 for a whole housing that you dont need.

I'm talking about the piece that I attached to the actual headlight housing, the silver ball piece that is snapped into the socket.

A picture is worth a thousand words

I think I know the piece you're describing and I'd be surprised if you couldn't order that part from Toyota

Yeah, I should've grabbed a picture of mine, but I didn't, so enjoy Rickashay's:

The piece that broke on mine is the in the lower left hand corner, unfortunately it's not the actual black piece, or the silver part that snaps into it. Rather it's the base of that piece. In the picture there are 3 edges attached to the housing that strengthen/support it; those guys are sheared right through.

The ball stud boss, that it threads into?

Can it be epoxied?

I tried that, it worked for like a month, and then fell apart. In order to avoid having to re-epoxy it every month, I ordered new housings and am gonna swap over the projectors.

Been a minute since I've been here

Got an Infiniti G37x back in August and have been doing things with that;

and just got back into driving the 4R. Decided it was time to fix some issues that I have with the 4R. Namely, I never did anything about it when I did my projectors, but when I brake my drivers side halo turns off. The passengers side doesn't do anything. When I release the brake, it turns back on and it is really annoying. I really don't want to try to rewire it because both halos are wired directly into the corner lights. Aside from rewiring it, any suggestions?
