I have a 9 mo. German Shepherd that loves to ride in the back of the 4runner. The issue is that the large back step to get into the cargo area get really slippery when it gets wet or snowy. He's just a puppy now so soon he will be able to clear the step directly into the cargo area but I don't want him killing his joints and stuff falling on that step (or scratching the back bumper trying to get up). Any ideas? I was thinking maybe a line of grip tape or something to that effect.

I have seen ramps but he's a 9 mo German Shepherd haha he can certainly make the jump himself. The issue is that he will leap up there and the sloped and foot wide back step will make his butt slide out and he panics. This leads to his back feet and claws trying to claw his way up my back bumper! :doh:

I have used 3M anti-slip tape for the last couple of years on the rear bumper and my sliders . Really good stuff and my Doberman had the same problem til I put some 1 inch strips down . She couldn't get any grip on the ABS plastic.
Here's a cheap place for it as you can get it by the yard instead of the roll.... Non Skid Tape - 3M Anti Slip Scotch Safety Walk Tape

How about a platform or something that slides in the receiver? Cut the jump in half..
I wouldn't worry too much about it. He's only 9 months old-- he will clear it no problem by the time he is 1.5 yrs. Our German Shorthaired Pointer is tiny... he stands maybe 2 feet at the shoulders and he clears it just fine. As a matter of fact, we are in a loaner Tundra from Toyota right now while they put leather in the 4Runner, and he can jump into the bed (about 3.5 feet) with no problem.
If you really want to though, I'd put some non-skid on the bumper.

I would also see about getting some protective film put over the rear bumper too... just in case

Once he has the confidence to hop up there, you wont have to worry about scratching the bumper. My big lab is in and out of mine every day. His claws never touch the bumper, just the pads of his feet. My bumper is in perfect shape.

Go buy a cheap bathroom rug with the rubber backing and lay that over the bumper when he gets in and out. You can throw it away in a few months because you won't need it anymore.

What I did is mask off the black area on the top of the bumper and shoot about 5 coats of plastidip on it as it is not as slippery as the bumper material.
I then used black electrical tape on the little white edge between the end of the black pad an the chrome strip.
If you want to get really creative you could spray a few base coats then spray a nice wet coat and sprinkle fine sand onto the plastidip then shoot one final coat to seal the sand.
The black area on the bumper is the bumper and is not removable so whatever you do keep that in mind.

Just wanted to share my quick solution to this as my 3-year old American Bulldog was slipping when jumping in the back. These were $7/pair at WalMart and took 5 minutes to install. Very sturdy thick rubber w/3M backing. Have worked great and don't look too shabby.

This is a great idea, I wish I would have found this sooner. As my 11 year old doberman can't quite jump up into the back of my lifted runner unless she has a running start.

I don't see why it would not work as long as the tread surface is relatively smooth...it might not work so well over a diamond plate tread like Budbuilt uses...
