My first Toyota purchase

Just reecently bought a 2008 4Runner SR5 4x4 off an insurance auction for pretty cheap with not that much wrong with it. From what we've figured out there is a blown passenger curtain airbag, very minor damage to the passenger side, and a faulty ABS brake booster master cylinder. Hoping to fix it up for cheap and have a nice ride!

It's a V6 with 130k miles on it, Paid 6k for it. And im located in the North Myrtle Beach area.

The curtain airbag deployed without any windows breaking? Seems kinda crazy. But I guess it's not a ton of side inertia needed to deploy that.

I honestly have no idea how the airbag deployed with such minor damage. I'm not complaining though. Ill post updates as we get it fixed up.

That's awesome looks like a steal if there is no hidden damage.

Pretty minimal damage but I know that my '06 had a recall for inadvertent side curtain air bag deployment and the control modules were replaced on both sides.

I wonder if this affected the '08's as well. Check with a dealer to see if there was a bulletin issued.

As far as the airbag, where would one get that part? I'm thinking dealer, but I'm sure that would cost a fortune. There's gotta be another distributor or something?

I would look at wrecking yards. When I totalled my '03 only the front bags deployed, there's bound to be plenty of wrecks out there with either no bag deployments or only partial deployments.

No actually. Wont even have to replace it. I wouldnt be surprised if it starts sagging in that area sometime down the line but as of now I think it could easily just be tucked back into place once the airbag is replaced.

That's great! My friend goes to the yard almost everyday and tells me (I'm looking for a driver's airbag for my Civic..... mine is fine, it's just faded to sh##) airbags are extremely tough to get. Most of them are deployed.

Airbag can deploy when the sensor senses an angle that may immanent to a rollover. Not sure if most or all these trucks have it or if it was an option, but mine has a RSCA (Rollover Side Curtain Airbag) defeat switch to prevent activation when in offroad situations.

Update:
Turns out the brake issue was just a sensor??? Even though the pedal would go straight to the floor and had no brakes at all?? Oh well, blessing in disguise, im certainly not complaining about not having to pay $500+ for a new ABS brake booster. Just dropped off the truck to install the airbag so we should be running at 100% very soon!!

I did not know a sensor could do that, the brakes are hydraulic.

Could you elaborate as to what sensor it was that cause the brake issue?
I find it hard to believe that a bad sensor would cause the pedal to go to the floor!!

The abs sensor was disconnected. Thats all I was told by the mechanic. The issue might have also been from the truck sitting for so many months but all that was done was the abs sensor was connected. Both the abs light and the brake light were on and now they are not.
