Specifically: this wreck 17 y/o, a week ago a 20 y/o crashed and flipped, two weeks ago a teen driver flipped a 4Runner into a tree and 4 people died. That is 3 incidents in the last 30 days on T4R, all with drivers < or = 20 y/o.

No offense to the OP but this is quite common with younger drivers. I am 29 and I don't have a kid but if I did, I wouldn't buy my 17 y/o a 4WD vehicle.


Try this formula:

4Runner + Off_Roading + 20 y/o + didn't buy the truck with their own earned money

= likely to do dumb sh$t and then expect parents to buy them another new/used vehicle after a wreck :ybrick:

the vehicle here is not the issue, its the driver(s). i know personally of two "kids" both still in their teens, one who is very well off, but also works his butt off, and he owns a new(er) lancer evo (08 or 09 i think) and has done some fair mods too it, and another who isnt as well off but not poor either, and has 04 honda accord . the guy with the accord has wrecked it several times and has been dropped by two insurance co. in the last 6months, and the one with the EVO hasnt had one speeding ticket or accident. its all about the person and their discipline and level of maturity. -not saying that any one of you guys who have recently rolled or wrecked your runners are immature or lose cannons. i also know a kid(my cousin) who has an older 4x4 toyota pick up, he has rolled it i dont know how many times, but they have all been off roading and wheeling times(its caged), but never wrecked his DD(at least not his fault, he did get rear-ended at a stop light by a mail man).

the vehicle has nothing to do with it, its the driver. the drivers who have wrecked their rigs on here might not have wrecked their rigs if they where say a ford tarus or toyota camery that day, but id almost bet eventually they would have wrecked them. sure the toyota camery would probably not have rolled driven the same way on the same road under the same conditions as the 4runners, but whos to say the next day they didnt push the a little harder/further, and the next and the next and the next till one day the inevitable happends...

So, what contributes to the roll-overs?

Is it that they are lifted, or too high speed, or both? Are the stock ones, much less likely to flip?

all SUVs have a higher center of gravity than most cars. that being coupled with inexperienced drivers and peer pressure or the pursuit of happiness/fun can be devastating. 4runners are no more prone to roll-overs than a Jeep Cherokee, Nissan Pathfinder, or Chevy Trail Blazer ect. i can go out tonight and roll my wife's Toyota Yaris or go get one of our patrol cars and flip it if i wanted to and was dumb enough. no vehicle is beyond flipping/rolling. look at the video posted, they tried a sudden lane change at 55mph with out trying to slow down... do that in any SUV and you will be in for one crazy scary ride!

Im with the generalization. Being 33 now I can say in the past 8-9 years the wrecks I have been in have not been my fault. Now before that I had to take blame for most of them including the one when I was 16 and flipped my 93 Toy 4x4.

maybe one thing you guys are over looking... I would bet the shocks and struts were long over due to be replaced! Bad dampers is a combination for disaster. Before I replaced mine (on a truck with 198k at the time) there was so much body roll that was heavily accentuated by the high center of gravity. I hate to say it, but I ALMOST rolled mine (I am 31 years old and drive responsibly). I absolutely feel that the extremely worn out (ZERO compression damping) rear shocks played a role in how my truck reacted in this particular situation. LUCKILY I was able to "save it" and put the shocks on the next day!

Yeah, not saying that driver ability isnt part of it, but damn when my shocks were blown and my sway bar links busted my truck handle like crap, and it most certainly would have rolled easier than how it sits now.

I know there are many responsible younger drivers out there but it is always some loose cannon that gives you all a bad name.
