how old are you, how long have you had your license? how many tickets have you had or your parents, how many accidents?....

If I remember right, it goes like this- if there are 2 cars in the house, and 3 drivers, you, as the kid are listed as the 3rd, and only part-time driver, so your insurance is fairly low. But when you add a 3rd car, YOU become the primary driver on that car, so, it goes through the roof. Especially if you have any sort of poor driving history, compounded by living in a populated area and driving an SUV that people think will roll over. Statistically, they are right, no matter how safe you in particular drive.

whow whow whow what the hell do i have to do with his insurance being so high... jezz:lookout:

spoiler900, we need some more info.

How old are you? Are you the primary driver of the 4Runner? If you are 17, and you are the primary driver of the 4Runner, then yes...it's probably going to be high. However....$600/month is insane. Are you sure it's a month? Not $600/6 months? $100/month sounds more like it.....

All I know is I pay $85/month for full coverage on both my 2001 4Runner and my 2001 RAV4. So only like $42 each.

My 4runner is like $650 a year with full coverage, its the cheapest on the policy, with me as the driver at 19.

So mommy and daddy pay your insurance ....

Had you had to pay the insurance yourself you'd have checked the rate before you bought the vehicle. Its what adults do.

Um I pay $280 a month for a 04 TL 6spd full cover , liability for my 00 4runner 5speed and renters insurance and im 21 with just my name on the policy and i thought i was getting ripped

No one in my family did that, stop being so condescending. His insurance is too high, no need to be a prick about it, no one expects a $5k car to cost $5k a year to insure...

ha yeah im only 20, maybe ill "sell" the 4runner to my dad and pay it in his name. no tickets and no accidents. The 2001 Acura TL is mine also, and he said he would pay the insurance on the Acura because he bought the car for me when i was 16 but I gotta pay for the 4Runner, but yeah even so 1200 a year to insure is crazy

Shop around. You should be able to get a single 25/50 full-coverage policy for ~$1000/year or less if you don't have any accidents. Stay away from 15/30 policies (unless you want to pay-out of-pocket for 1/2 of that new Mercedes you might run into). $600/month is either a mistake or the worst rate I've ever heard of for someone who doesn't have multiple DUIs or accidents.

Im 24 and had a 2004 wrx. When i sold it and added my 1994 4runner and insurance was exact same price. Wrx had more safety features and higher value. 4runner has less safety features. Me and wifes insurance is pretty low though. 130 a month for full coverage on both our cars.

thread hijack:
I had a 2001 TL before the 4Runner, traded it in at a huge loss after the 6 or 7th transmission replacement.
Some were dying on the new car drive out from the dealer or on the way to park on the showroom floor. Major design defect - did they ever fix the root cause ? Some replacement transmissions had a bigger hole drilled somewhere to let more oil hit the 900deg F 3rd gear clutch pack.

Thankful for the conventional design of the 4R's transmission, series planetary gear sets rather than the Acura's manual transmission behind a torque converter with computer controlled shifts.

That sounds pretty ridiculous. Get on the phone with Progressive. They gave me the best rate after State Farm cancelled me off my parents policy at 18 for too many accidents. At 20 you should really have your own policy. I bet you can get insured for less than 150 per month. After being accident free for 8 years I am paying 110 per month for 3 vehicles. I pay 28 per month for full coverage on 2 motorcycles. so I am paying less than 150 per month for 5 vehicles.

1997 Chevy Z71
2006 Mazda 3
1999 4 Runner
2006 Honda Shadow 750
1993 Suzuki GS500

I wish insurance in ontario canada matched what you guys were paying...im paying 300$ a month for very very basic coverage. im 25, have 1 minor speeding ticking (10 over) and an accident 5 years ago. I drive a 98 CR-V, but regardless of what vehicle i have on my policy its the same price.

IMHO, while you're going to get hosed on insurance to a certain amount (you're 20, you're a guy, and you have an Acura) that does seem a bit high. I'd check out Progressive to see if they can help you out.

This conversation went into the crazy weeds way to fast. There are simply too many variables for us to couch referee the insurance rate.

Rates only use about 100 different variables to determine the rate. Age, driving record, etc.etc.

His dad could have him with comprehensive coverage or he could be with a policy company that doesn't like 4x4 vehicles.

Simply put. We don't know. What you SHOULD do is shop around. I think that will give you a basis to move forward. For example: I have a near perfect driving record and when I shopped for a qoute in D.C. for my runner, several places a qouteed were sky high. I went to Geico, and it was much cheaper. On the order of 400 dollars every 6 months cheaper.

Why? No idea. Honestly. Each company uses similar data, but each usually has its own variable formula used to determine the qoute.

if your credit sucks, so will your rates.

where are you located? if you are in NC or SC I can advise . . .

and PS- Toyota's for some reason always seem to have higher rates. (note the higher resale values)

there are just way too many variables here to diagnose. i write, review, and modify policies of all types every day. there is rarely one that is the same as another rating wise. the internal rating components mostly are seen by only underwriters. there are 3 main variables: Credit, Prior Insurance Coverage History (continuous coverage is VERY VERY important), and driving record. If you have good credentials there, you shouldn't have a bad rate regardless of your age. you might want to confirm that you are receiving all of your discounts. Who's to say your agent (if you even have a local one) is reviewing your policy on a regular basis to ensure proper rating.... i find policies all the time that haven't been touched for years.
