150423 – 4R Trek 271 – Exploring north of Jessup.
It’s been a bit since the Bodie Trek and the Elephant Head trek. Tuesday and Wednesday we had some thunderstorms with some rain here and there. This morning it was cool and cloudy so I decided to set out and explore some trails north of Jessup. There are lots of old mining tracks that wander all over the place; some that kinda’ peter out and some that just turn into almost trails that wander down dry washes and others that one doesn’t know whether they are a trail or not.
Any how I set out at about 7:30 and headed north east up highway 80. After 18 miles I turned off into the dirt. The first 10 miles I followed the remains of the original 1930s transcontinental highway (mostly gravel and dirt) and a power line service road (just dirt). Then I turned north into a canyon that I have been calling “Tower Canyon” because a thousand plus foot tower has been being erected near the ridge top.
Another ten miles and I arrive at the tower. Finally it is complete. It’s all wired into a building at its base that say’s it belongs to the FCC. The building and tower are surrounded by chain link and razor wire.
From there I wander another dozen miles mostly in Low Range and low gears. I am discovering lots of new trails and eventually make it back to the highway. I arrive home after a total of 86 miles (half on pavement and half in the dirt. Fuel economy for the day is just under 16mpg.
- Incidentally: Jessup is about 80 miles east of the CA/NV state line on Interstate 80 -
