My truck is hot... too hot?

How does one check the fan clutch. Never seen it come above half except that one time i had a jetski on the front. Now being more vigilant with a scan gauge. The intake air temp was 189 at the time i was 227 i was idle with ac. Isnt the cooling temp sensor a known issue with higher milages? I am at 242k

I just did a video on how I tested and replaced my fan clutch. Something is very wrong with your coolant temps. You should not be seeing anywhere near 227.

In the order of easiest and least expensive, do the following:

1) Check your coolant level. If it's low, investigate a possible leak.
2) Make sure your radiator cap is intact and it's an OEM one. I just helped another member resolve higher than normal coolant temps and his cap was broken and not holding pressure. Missing parts were inside the radiator. Got a spring to come out but the other parts are still in there somewhere. He chose to replace the radiator so no biggie.
3) If the coolant level and cap are good, the next most affordable option is to drain the coolant and replace the thermostat. Make sure you buy OEM, get a new gasket and install the jiggle valve pointing downward at the 6 o'clock position.
4) if the thermostat wasn't the culprit, the next thing I'd check is the fan clutch and maybe just replace it. StreetCreeper said his fan clutch passed all the tests he did on his but his higher temps were definitely due to a subpar fan clutch.
5) Replace the radiator. It's the most expensive but it's easy to replace.

BUT, you could check the fan clutch first and if it does show signs it's worn out, you could buy a new fan clutch for $90 through Rock Auto. The only problem is my fan clutch did show signs it was wearing out but putting in a new fan clutch did nothing for my temps. My temps were a little higher than I was use to seeing and I was wondering if it was the fan clutch going out or just a case of warmer ambient temps in my area of California. It was just the warmer ambient temps and my fan clutch was still doing it's job.

Here's the video:

It is your radiator. If it is the original radiator, I am sure it is clogged. Get a new radiator.
I replaced with koyo 1998a day one of ownership. Oem radiator cap only no matter what vehicle.

Ordered oem fan clutch amazon 94.99 free ship. Hard to see any videos until just now, working in nowhere Arkansas zero service to watch videos. Tapatalk works decent tho.

Its only an issue at idle for more than 30 min. When its 105 outside and humid. But i only saw it that once. Only had the scan gauge since monday lol.

Edit: timing belt and water pump were last done early 07, 125k. I see a full timing kit with waterpump in my future. Any issues with that rock auto timong kits? This truck is 95%oem for quality and durability.

that is pretty extreme, usually you need the air flow when the car is moving. usually its forgiving, but that is when there is nothing wrong with the car, and usually 105 outside is pretty hot. so things start to add up and might be a problem, you get 227 when idling?

I dont see over 198 driving. ER. havent seen yet.

On parkway with AC ON , on a humid and hot day. Going 70-80 mph. My temp was around 202-208. And I didn't even worry. Drive for an hour at that speed. Regular city driving. It's below 200 around 195-198. And I never worry.

Same for me, in town 195-200

On freeway 205-208

Must be a 5-speed thing, funny though, if I drop out of 5th gear, to 4th gear I can count on the temp to drop from 208 down to 199 in just seconds.

Timing belt kit

Just an update on the overheating issue. I flushed the rad this past weekend, flipped the thermostat, and refilled with 50/50 Toyota red coolant and water and I'm seeing <190° with 110°+ intake temp. That darn jiggle valve. Thank you everyone for the help and advice!
