Hmm...do you think that you could've left the doors open (obviously, mask off the opening ) so you can let the edge flow into the jambs a bit? Then it might be easier to hide the sharp edge.

No. I'd probably just open the door when I tape around the weather stripping, then close it and just be a little more careful with the razor at the end.

Nice! Glad you did it before me, I'm still on the fence about what color I want to do, thought about doing a digi urban camo, but looks like I'm going to stick to a solid flat color. What color is that? Is that the anthracite?

Personally I like it and am on the plastdip bandwagon. I really like the roof gloss black. have you thought about other parts like the hood. Only since you said it was a PITA and left uneven spots. I know some do a matte black hood but maybe the other way around?

Yep. Its anthracite. I wanted something that would look good with a black roof. I like grey hues, but didn't want it to look like primer. The metallic element really sets it off and shows off the contours of the truck. I've also considered dark green, but they really didn't have a shade I liked and I didn't want to get into custom mixing....at least on my first attempt.

Yeah, I thought about that, but the main reason I'm doing this is for paint protection on the trail. The hood took some serious abuse last time I went wheeling, so it had to be covered.

As far as protection goes, I have no idea if it will work, but it will get a thorough test later this month on the K-Trail and I'll be sure and update everyone. I have to say, after just curing for a day, this stuff seems pretty durable. I'm thinking the "Rubber Dip" (for automotive refinishing, according to the label) might be a little different formula? :shrug:

Looks awesome! Did you know you can get a kit to fix where you will get peels and chips? I'm pretty sure it's on dipyourcar. It almost looks like nail polish remover, you put a glove on, dip your fingers in, rub a little on the spot, it gets soft and sticky again, you smooth it out and let it dry, then give a quick spray over it again.

I did the grill, emblems and the chrome trim around my Audi A4 with plasti dip last spring. Talk about difficult to get the trim done, Audis weather stripping on their doors comes out on top of the chrome trim, so I had to do it with the doors poem, and the rubber window trims had no real sharp edges, so I covered them too.

I'm considering doing my wheels in black, but seeing this color, I might opt for it.

Would I do it again? I'm not sure. The cost was about $400 including dip, tape, a respirator, and spray gun. It took a LOT of time and I'm not sure how long it will last. I did this primarily for paint protection on the trail and I'll be curious to see how it holds up on our K trail run next month. FWIW, I was quoted $800 for a local installer to do it...is it worth the savings? :shrug: it was a big mess and took a lot of time....maybe so.

I'm digging the anthracite though, I was going to do that color. I think I narrowed down my colors, I was going to do that camo green, but I'm not ready to bro on that level. Either Navy Blue/ Black mix or anthracite/blue mix.

Just curious, i need to plan when I order my dip, how long did it take for your order to come in?

It took about 5 days. I followed their advice and used a couple gallons of Gunmetal for a base coat. It saved $50.

Just wanted to give my $.02 .. I vote for anthracite/blue mix.. I don't know what it would look like but I'm thinking it would probably be pretty nice.

Thanks for posting a link... I stayed up till 2am watching DYC videos. Mixing colors, glossifier, proper technique, spot shooting....

but I am most interested in the clear plastidip. I have a silver runner and I think giving it a matte finish would look cool.

Great job! I've also been on the fence about doing this. Looking forward to your trail update. My 4Runner is black too and got some serious scratches this past weekend. Also, not sure if anybody mentioned this, but I've heard plasti dip gets a weird stain when it's covered with mud. Would like to know if you experience that after your trail run. Once again looks good.

Does the Wagner work as well as their sprayer? Isn't the plastidip thicker than most paints? What size tip did you use?

Thanks! I haven't used their sprayer to compare, but the Wagner did just fine. I just used a standard sprayer......stirred it up, filled the hopper, and went to town. The dip by-the-gallon is actually very thin.
