Name that sound

Hey guys, I'm having a intermittent "howling" noise coming from the engine. Let me know if you have any ideas. I just had the timing belt, water pump, fan clutch idler bracket, all belts, idler and tensioner, and thermostat etc... the regular timing belt replacement stuff, done in October. To ME, it almost sounds like the water pump is going out and that will really piss me off if it is.. but I could be wrong. Thanks!

it's hard to tell. I have a howling from mine, but it's my alternator. If you have a large screwdriver, you can use it as a stethoscope by placing it on the accessories and listening while the noise is happening.

Good call, I'll try that. Does your alternator sound similar or is it more of a whining sound? The reason I say it might be the water pump is that's the general area it's coming from but I haven't heard this kinda noise before. This noise just sounds hollow to me.

...You have a pretty dirty engine bay. This might sound stupid but when I went mudding one day, I apparently got mud in my brakes and between my rotors. I pulled up to a gas station for...well, gas, and the gas attendant told me I bent my axle. I thought he was hysterical.

My point: Go get some degreaser or engine cleaner and spray down your engine bay.

Reason: It could just be a chunk of dirt having friction with a belt or a rock in a hard place. If it doesnt fix it, hey, no loss. Now you have a clean engine bay to work in.

Instructions:
1) Unplug (-)negative battery terminal.
2) wait for engine to cool.
3) Wrap all aftermarket electrical equipment, including alternator and other exposed wiring.
4) Gently mist the degreaser throughout engine bay.
5) Let it sit for about 30 minutes.
6) If it doesnt seem to be pulling much off, try to scrub troubled areas.
7) Rinse engine bay thoroughly and let dry.
8) Unwrap all electrical equipment.
9) Plug battery terminal back in.
10) Start your car on up.

Sorry, that might not fix problem. But its a good start, its cheap, and will help further down the repair process.

mine howls. Only at idle though, the noise goes away when driving.

Yeah mine only starts making that noise after I've driven it. It won't do it when I start the car. I'll need to edit my original post lol thanks though! I'll try the screwdriver idea.

Hahaha yes indeed, it's from the past month. I'll be cleaning the engine bay though regardless. Thanks!
