Steve Ganz from Carson Toyota sells the microphone for $50. He does not have any in stock but he said once he gets 10 people, he will order it again. (3-4 weeks) I asked him to add me to the waiting list.

I thought the 4Runners with NAV already had this? I assumed they did because the pictures in the brochure and website all have the voice button on the steering wheel. If you look close enough, you'll see "VOICE NAVIGATION" at the top of the NAV screen as well. Did Toyota make a marketing mistake?

We need to find a part number for that button! That would be the ideal place to have it while driving.

my repair parts list (not the OEM repair manual) for the 2003 4runner shows the part number for the left hand side (the audio buttons as) part number 84247-35010...show's a rough replacement value of $85.17. it shows a part number for the right side, but I'm betting it's the plastic we've already got. part number 84244-35010...replacement value $0.00 (which is odd, 'cause plastic costs too...) Then there's a description called 'harness, switch' part number 84204-58010 value $32.58, must be the wiring up from the radio to the steering wheel.
ok, so that's just for the statement of those facts. looking in my 2003 oem repair manual...in vol 2, page 67-23 it says this for step 5:
Remove steering pad switch LH (W/O steering pad switch RH)
(a) disconnect the connector.
(b) disconnect the connector of cruise control main switch
(c) remove screw
(d) disengage the meshing of 2 pins and remove the steering pad switch LH
the thing that caught my eye was the "w/o steering pad switch rh" I would have thought they would have called what we have on the standard 4Rs that came w/o the nav, the "steering pad blank RH" or "steering pad cover RH"
Anyone got any lists for the 04? I went by the dealer about a week ago to look at mounts for the backup camera on the 4R, but our local dealer here didn't have any 4Rs w/ the nav system left, I ended up looking at the Land Cruiser. Maybe I'll go back and look again and see if I can track one down...

Surely there must be a way of "training" the Nav System to recognize your voice. For example the training session would go something like this: Enter the voice training mode. You would say the voice command, then press the appropriate key then say the command again, do this until you have completed all the comands you want to function properly then you would exit the training mode.
This is not the actual sequence, just a hypothetical example.
Other voice activated software has some sort of training session so the system will recognize your particular regional accent or dialect.

Sorry it took so long but here are the pics of the wiring..

Wiring
This is when you cut open the heat shrink around the nav, I see they use common ground for mic, and also it uses the same ground to trigger the button to activate.
Different angle
Yellow and Red go to the mic, and seems to be the input part, and the other colors are the ground, also right undernieth the red, that wire goes to the switch which is a momentary trigger to ground, which it gets from all the other wires tied together.
