you can't compress data like you can a video or sound file. what you can do though is to use a re-authoring software to 'cut-out' parts of the dvd that you don't need. for example canada and/or a part of the u.s. you rarely visit until you have under 4.7 gigs of data left.
btw, i'm already hearing (from the originator of this thread i believe) that the dual layer dvd copies aren't working in the nav system. this isn't suprising as the laser in the nav systems may not be good enough to penetrate the dual layer copies. the original was not 'burned', they are pressed by machine, making them much easier to read by the laser.

Actually, cutting out parts is one way, there is another way.
If it is video data, and the format is the same as a normal DVD, you can use an open source program called "DVD Shrink". It's freeware. Just do a google search on the name. It will RIP the data from the DVD and compress it automatically so it will fit on a 4.7 gig DVD or let you re-author it.

the laser's probably not sensitive enough on the denso nav unit to read dual layer discs. dual layer discs has a semi transparent first layer so that the laser can also read through to the second layer behind it while still maintaining enough reflection for the laser to read itself (the first layer) as well. a lot of 'first gen' lasers can't focus on this degraded first layer.

what do you mean by that? do you mean it reads the stock 9.4GB disc without any problems? the original disc is pressed, as are all legitimate dvds you purchase in the store made from the factory. any dvd player can read these type. even 10 year old ones. this is a completely different process than when you actually 'burn' a dual layer copy with a dvd burner. the '1's' and '0's' (or more precisely the physical pits on the disc) on a pressed dvd are 1000% sharper than a burned dvd. that's why the lasers have trouble with burned copies.

For the 4th Gen Navigations (Camry Nav) I made a Image of the the disc using Nero, and burned it on to a Verbatim DL DVD, with a LG DL DVDR with no problems what so ever.
How I copied.
The image was 7.57 GB, (8,135,803.036) bytes.
I put my orginal away, and just use my "backup"

Oh I tried cheap media, and my Nav just puked it back... sometimes you get what you pay for.

I just did a backup of my Toyota navigation DVD. version 5.1 the one that came out this January. Did exactly the same thing as Jo..burnt the image to Hardrive. Used DL DVD to burn to and viola. Did not spit it out or anything. Works great. So I know that 3rd GEN navigation systems will read this.
