Need help with 91 4runner

I have a 91 4runner with the 3.0 5sp, I picked up pretty cheap, but had to do a timing belt (not broke), water pump, rotors, bearings, etc. My question is this, what fuel mileage should I be getting? As of right now Im lucky if Im getting 10mpg. And also it has a big battery drain on it, it will drain the battery overnight. Thanks for any help.

15-19 mpg would maybe be closer to the best you'd ever get? Replace fuel filter lately? air filter? plugs & wires? How much psi are you running in your tires? and are the psi's the same? Any drag on your wheels from your brakes? Jack up each wheel at a time and spin it and see how freely it spins.

Is the battery hot when you park it and it drains when it's parked? Or is driving it, is what's draining it? If it's getting drained while driving, the alt/ belt could be loose or the alt. could not be charging the batt( also possible wiring or connector end issue ) . If it's draining while parked, IMO.....i'd park it one night ( given you don't know what's' draining it ) and start pulling fuses and plugging them back in, one at a time, until you see a spark when you replug the fuse in, that could at least give you an area or item to research or inspect.

That's about the limits of my 411. Keep us posted

Mike,

Yes I have replaced the air filter, plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Have not replaced the fuel filter though, will give that a try. All the wheels spin freely and I am running 32psi in 31 10.50 15.As far as the electrical drain it does not drain while it is running. Yes the battery is hot and it is dead the next morning. Have pulled fuses and have not been able to find it yet. I did instal a power disconnect switch though. Thanks for the info.

What gas are you running? Arco, shell, Chevron, 76??? I installed a clear inline filter some years back on a different vehicle to see which gas took the longest to turn the filter black. Shell and Arco were close for the worst. Chevron for me had the least amount of crap in it. That's what I use now I my 95 runner with 3.slow I get about 17mpg on most tanks with 89oct. I did put in NGK plugs and wires, new rotor and cap, fresh fuel filter and a washable air filter. Same size tires too but I like mine at 35psi when it's dry, 32 on rainy roads.

Sorry for stupid question but did you confirm the gap yourself on the plugs? Drawing at straws here.

Also, when you have a friend to help, go back and put your ear on the gas tank and have ( friend ) touch the positive cable to the battery to check for fuel pump kicking on when it's not supposed to.

Yeah we gaped them to the correct gap before we installed them. Ok will do that later today. Do you think the fuel pump could be staying hot all the time and if so would that be enough of a draw to drain the battery overnight? Thanks for all the help. Love my 4runner, just wished that I could get these last two bugs worked out.

Well, if it's not a light, which clearly you'd see at nighttime, then i start thinking of what else could be cutting on and draining it so much to kill it. The fuel pump just seemed like it'd be something worth checking cause it's not you like you spend alot of time with your head in areas where you could hear it humming after you cut the truck off. If it was a fan up front, you'd hear it, if it was a wiper motor, you'd hear/see it, or the heat/ac blower you'd hear it. Outside of a dead cell in the battery, i'm stumped. Maybe see if someone will loan you a 'good' battery for 1 night and put it in to see if IT gets drained as well.

Once the first battery was dead I took it in to napa to have them charge it and it was bad, so I bought a new one. Same thing dead the next morning. Idk if this possible but someone told me that maybe the starter could be bad, or they also said the injectors could be staying hot. I checked the alternator and its good its about to the point where Im going to take it to a toyota dealer and let them fix it.

I gotcha man, imo if the starter was pullin any juice, you'd have a light on in the dash showing the battery or something ( given the dash bulbs are all good ), oh and back to something i suggested already, disconnect the hot cable ( the top side connection ) from the starter going to the battery, try tapping the connector to the battery intermittently to encourage a spark if it IS the starter draining it.
