Need help with cv axle I.D.

Hi guys,

I am hoping that some of the Toyota gurus on here can help me with a wee bit of confusion I am having.... I am currently rebuilding a set of CV axles, which I bought from a wrecker a year or two back, and when taking the first one apart I encountered something weird. The inboard "tulip" joint is not held in place in the manner shown in the Toyota service manual (or any other source I consulted), IE: a snap ring on the end of the shaft, or "above" the tulip (larger top photo). Instead, it is held with a circlip, and the snap ring is BELOW the tulip (smaller lower photo). Has anyone encountered this on a known 3rd gen OEM axle? Is there any way to tell if I'm working with a genuine Toyota axle? I'm suspecting I got an aftermarket axle; if that is the case, I don't want to waste time and Toyota reboot kits on a potentially junk axle. Opinions and suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

That's not an OEM axle. Another way to tell is that the inner joint has a wavy design on the casing. The corresponding inner CV boot also has the wave. Most aftermarket joints are just a circular cylinder with the wavy part (For the tri lobes) machined in. Therefore, since the casing is circular, CV reboot kits designed for the 4Runner won't fit the inner joint unless you get a generic CV boot kit.
 
Thanks for the decisive reply nobb! Although I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "wavy"? If it's any help, here is a picture of the inner joint....is that what you mean by wavy?

Doh! I messed up looking at that picture. Disregard my previous comment! I wasn't thinking clearly and thought the boot was the actual CV metal casing.

Is there any chance the CV was previously rebuilt and whoever did jammed the pieces together incorrectly? The casing does infact look OEM because most aftermarket CV cases are cylindrical on the outside and don't have the three lobes on the casing (outside). I've rebuilt these CVs many many times and the circlip on the inner joint always goes at the very end of the shaft to prevent the tulip from coming out. I'm still having troubles understanding from your original post how is it that the tulip is actually being held in place?

Napa max drives ones have the wavy shape. But the shafts look different on the napas, same thickness the whole length vs tapered.

They are just held in the casing by the boot and boot clamps. They slide in and out a bit on those big rollers. Unless I didnt understand which part youre talking about.

Talking about the metal tulip (not sure of the terminology, but this is the metal piece with the needle bearings and 3 rollers). This part slides onto the shaft, then is held by a single snapring on the tip of the shaft.
 
If I'm seeing and reading that correctly my truck is like that- I have CVs off a 97 Tacoma with manual hubs

Then I looked for the snap-ring that's supposed to be at the end of the shaft, holding the tripod (that thing with three rollers that's prolly called something else) on. Nothing. Nada. Hmmm...

Below the tripod on the shaft is a c-clip. Take it off.

You can then push tripod down the shaft a little and the other snap-ring will be visible. Take that off and the tripod will now come off.
