Need help with non-functional rear 12V DC outlet

So my rear 12V DC outlet is not working, took it out, and saw it was not connected to any harness/wires. I took apart the panel and cannot find any plug? The wires leading to the rear ends with a 4-pin connector. A wire harness connects this 4-pin connector to another 4-pin connector used by the rear brake/turn-light assembly, additionally this harness branches into a 6-pin that connects to a trailer light adapter/converter. There's no 2-pin connector for the 12V DC outlet at all. I'm thinking that this I need to replace this wire harness, or possibly splice into the pre-existing wires and then solder the ends onto the outlet directly? If this is the route I should take, which wires should I be splicing into. I will take photos if this is hard to follow.

I thought rear outlet was only a 99+ option.

Maybe the previous owner changed panels?

My 1998 has a factory one also so I don't think that the outlet is 99+ only.

Rather than overtake your thread with my pics ... I just re-wired all of this to run off my second battery, and you can see a good amount of that plugs wiring here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-g...on-eventualy-upgrade-thread-7.html#post912780

That being said, the power plugs in the 4Runner (especially after this many years) have quite a bit of resistance. It might be worth running directly from the battery (use a relay if you need to keep it switched with the ignition) to power this. Your device will thank you especially if it is power hungry.

Yes, 1997 with rear 12v outlet. Although, my storage compartment is much smaller that what is shown in your photo.

stick figure, thanks for the advice. will probably attempt to splice into the pre-existing wires first, since I don't do imagine using this rear outlet too often.
