Finally, someone whose done an 02 manual swap! I've been looking through countless threads and haven't seen one done. I have a few questions before i start mine my self.

I have a 97 manual Donor vehicles (was my old ride but frame rot along with other things led me to buy the 02)

If i swapped the ECU and the wiring harness it should be plug and play since its the same engine right? I'm also thinking about keeping the J shifter i always liked it better than the multimode.

Also before anyone says "if you have to ask you probably don't know how to" I've done countless repairs and work on my 4runner alone in my garage with air tools and also have replaced my clutch and serviced my tranny.

No. 96-97 have different connectors between auto ecu and manual ecu and the location of functions are different.

98-02 are plug and play.

I did get those codes as well as ABS which I assumed was linked to VSC/TRAC.

All the shift solenoid codes, AT fluid temp etc were also stored along with check engine.

But it's a done deal now. All I have to do is wire the clutch to make the cruise control disengage when I press the clutch.

4WD works perfectly with the multi-mode case.

What clutch did you go with?

I used the LCEngineering dual comp clutch, due to the supercharger. I like it but it chatters a little when engaging. Specifically when doing a hill start. Not sure if that is typical with that type of clutch. I have the stock weight flywheel.

I went with excedy clutch from autozone. Best part. MADE IN JAPAN! And it was under $200.

So pretty much to get this job done im looking at a matter of repinning my full harness and a few other electrical quirks

OR

I could just swap the motor from the 97 into the 02 and avoid most of that

I guess you could do what he OP did. He put a 04 tacoma ecu into his 4runner.

Otherwise you could swap engine harness or repin.

Basically the only difference between auto ecu and manual is the manual ecu does not have the automatic transmission functions. Like P, N , R, L, ...... get the idea. You could trick the auto ecu into thinking it’s in neutral so you could drive the truck with manual transmission. In other words allowing you to start it. And that’s why you get CEL codes. Which are for automatic transmission. Because the ecu is searching for the functions that no longer are hooked up.

If you get a 02 4runner. You could swap your manual into. And get a 04 tacoma ecu. Like OP did in this thread. I’ll assume you have j-shift tcase. Which will save you more headache.

hmm honestly i think im going to look into repining the harness because if it has different connections ill need to do it for the transmission connections as well

Ive read your thread a few times just gotta figure out where i can find the engine wiring diagrams for the 97 and 02 thne i can set aside an afternoon of deciphering which wires ill be keeping and which ones to cap off

PM me an e-mail address and I'll hook you up.

Hey man sorry to resurrect a 4 year old thread here but I’m about to start my swap. I had a quick question about your experience with the ABS/VSC/TRAC. I don’t want to bog up your thread but do you think you could send me a PM?

The tranny is in and everything else is completed. It drives fine, reverse lights work, clutch safety works as well. The wiring was done the same way as the rest of the threads, just used the diagram I posted above. The wire colors are different but pinouts on the PN switch plug are same.

I'm not going to go into detail on the whole swap since its been pretty much covered a few times before. The point of this thread is the CEL and ECU issue since its a 02 4Runner.
The ECU from 2004 Taco was plug and play and the most important NO CEL! I'm getting the VSC TRAC OFF lights though. From what I found out VSC and TRAC are a very rare option even on 04 Tacos so I'm guessing my ECU is not set up for it. Oh well, I'm not too worried about it since there wasn't a time where either one came in handy, TRAC may have been useful for helping to get out of a ditch but I think I can do without. I'm just going to take the bulbs out of the cluster and forget about it.

The VSC computer is still needed though since it controls ABS and the brakes, I tried running without it and barely stopped, the brake pedal was like a rock))). The module can be hidden under the lower dash panel and the mounting points have to be cut off from the housing.

Now I'm a happy owner of a 2002 5-speed!) it feels cool since not many people get to drive the same vehicle with auto and manual tranny)

So I just tried running my brakes without the VSC computer and ran into the same problem, (stiff brakes) I was wondering if there was a way to bypass the computer and make the pedal feel like normal without ABS VSC or TRAC, Because I am not sure where to tuck/remount the vsc computer and wouldn’t mind being rid of it. If not where and how did you tuck the computer under the dash? I’m swapping a 5speed and a j shift into my 2002 limited. As far as all the other wiring goes I’m keeping the auto ecu and tricking it into neutral at the Start Neutral Safety Switch

Enjoy your swap. From what I have researched the VSC/TRAC option in Tacomas was only on 2wd prerunners. With that said, I have never found a p/n for the ecu.

Trust me, get a Tru-Trac in the rear and you won’t miss TRAC at all!
