Need Input on Ride Quality - LTD vs. Trail

Hello everyone... new here...great forum!

I am coming out of a 2007 Wrangler Rubicon 4dr... ok main reason is I'm tired of the harsh ride. I'm 46 and getting soft I guess.

I want a 4runner because its frankly one of the last true 4wd trucks left as you all know. I'm now facing the Limited vs. Trail decision.

I drove an SR5, my dealer does not have an LTD or a Trail, so I have to decide to order... I love the look of the Trail but definitely want a better ride than I have.

Those with Trails and aftermarket tires and rims, how is the ride quality? How does it compare with the Ltd. with better offroad tires?

I can live w/o the fancy differences like dual zone etc. (I am coming from a Wrangler) but I really want a good ride quality.

My TE rides pretty nice, even with KDSS's stiffer sway bars and Load E tires at 44psi. Can't comment on the LTD, but I cannot imagine they would be too different.

Definitely better than the STi :D
 
Best ride is Trail w/ KDSS, then Limited (which has XREAS), then ride quality (mostly handling) drops significantly when you go to non-KDSS Trail or SR5.
 
Absolutely love the ride quality of my Limited, but the comments on Trail with KDSS make sense. I know that the X-REAS eliminates the nose dive some have commented on--what do the guys with the Trail + KDSS say about their set up in relation to nose dive?

Love the tightness and ride of my Limited. No nose dive and very little body roll through tight quick turns. Long trips are a breeze and I never feel fatigued when I get to my destination.
 
My 2011 4R TE i feel mine rides harsh ( it almost seems like the shocks are not responding fast enough or maybe my tires .... i don't know) . Especially in winter with all the potholes and heaving pavement cracks .

I have KDSS also on my TE.

I've driven both..... The Limited with X-Reas and the TE with KDSS ride quality are very close with the KDSS TE being a little stiffer with it's huge sway bars. It would probably handle a slalom course better because of these bigger sway bars and still get the same amount of up/down wheel travel as the Limited/SR5.

I personally like a stiffer suspension so I changed out the X-Reas suspension on my Limited to Icon CO's and couldn't be happier with the ride quality.

The thing you should also look at is that they have different 4x4 drivetrains.The Limited has a full time Torsen center diff and the TE has a part time with a transfer case. The TE has better offroad electronics for 4 low and a rear locker though. ARB has a rear air locker out for the Limited/SR5's as well as front lockers for all 5ths.

Can't go wrong on either IMO!Both great trucks!

Thanks all... I've decided on the TE... I'm a little shy going too far from my Wrangler in off-road... have a farm and go all over... and lots of mud due to my other passion... military armor.

seems like the ride in my non-kdss TE is kinda lumpy some times. I can't figure out if it's the engine/trans or just the suspension. I am a it concerned at this point.
 
I've owned, and driven both. The difference is so tiny if that it's not even worth mentioning. I switched from the limited to the trail for the looks, the stock limited look's to much like a mall crawler to me. (not saying I do much wheeling at all, don't want it all pin striped) :)
 
I have never felt it ride that bad except for in cold winter months and our horrible , horrible roads where I think nothing would ride very well in ice cold conditions , roads fill of pothole and heaving pavement crack . They get so bad in the city that they actually wreck peoples cars ..... honestly.

IMO there is a difference in how a suspension can handle these things. Like I said before its like the suspension cannot handle it at road speed limits and below.

I am trying to go with a better quality suspension OME to see if its gives an actual better ride than the stock , stiffer one yes but if it's able to handle it without bump steering your truck down the road I will be fine and my stepson has an OME and it handles all the above stuff much easier and even smoother than stock suspension. I can only hope my truck rides and handles rough roads like his does. Its night and day over stock .

I feel the same way. I wonder if the cold does not allow the KDSS system to work as well. Let me know if you have found any new information on this. Thanks.

You'll love the TE. I've done a couple 800 mile road trips and the ride quality was great (especially compared to my Subaru WRX). Also still performs off the pavement. Great choice!

***EDIT: lol, just saw how old this thread was... that'll teach me to look at the time stamps***
