Need opinions sr5 or trail

I just bought a trail today and I had similar questions. There were only 2 trails in my area ( 1.5million or so) and a ton of SR5's.

I wanted the locker, KDSS, multi terrain things and I like the looks of the hood scope. I ended up getting a great deal as I took my time with the dealership and honestly got it for what a similar SR5 would be worth.

Plus I put some KO2's on it which must make it much much better!
 
If I could go back it'd be a Trail Premium non-kdss/kdss whatever is available. KDSS solely for the resale value. Awesome fake hood for looks and the locker even though I will probably never use it, I just want to brag I have it.

But if I were to build a serious off-road T4R it would be a base SR5, stripped w/ ARB lockers, F&R long travel, and Kings.

Based on the number of women driving trails around Denver I don't think anyone that wants a trail would have any issue finding one. It's not that special.

Now an inferno TRD pro, maybe we are getting somewhere.... :mad2:

For the OP, just get a Limited, everyone knows they are the best! :wave:
 
There's an entire thread here about how to buy Trails. For my Trail no local dealerships had any, I was negotiating for one that was 3 hours away and one that was in another state
 
I bought a SR5 for the third row. I also picked up brand new trail rims with tires from a guy who decided to upgrade for $500 and sold the tires for the same amount. Upgraded to Bilsteins with toytec springs. Added a full length roof rack with front lightbar, right and left led pods, and back up pods. In all I spent less than what a trail would have cost and bought a SCAR 17 with the savings. I don't do any crazy rock climbing but I do go offroading when I need to get to my shooting locations here in vegas.
 
Wow this thread blew up.lol I understand everyone's opinion and I appreciate all the info. I decided on a '16 4runner trail classic silver without kdss. Couldn't turn down the trade-in on my '13 taco Prerunner

I don't want to fan the flames about the resale value, desirability, etc. But I will advise anyone who really wants to dig into the subject to search their classifieds for 3rd Gen 4Runners. SR5, Limited, Sport, with locker, without lockers: there's not much spread in the prices.

You'll see the occasional enthusiast selling a 5 speed, eLocker 3rd Gen looking for the other enthusiast that wants one. But by and large the majority of them regardless off trim level and options will be priced similarly. I think the same will hold true as the 5th Gens age.

The Limited to me just screams mall crawler/never going to see the trails. It's the top notch vehicle of choice for pretentious housewives here in the Phoenix valley area.
 
My first 5th gen was a 2010 SR5. It was a great vehicle, but I always lusted after the looks of the trail edition. I loved the unpainted fenders and the slimmer rocker panels/less luxurious bumpers. The TE wasn't available in white and my wife and I wanted leather. Plus, dollar for dollar, the SR5 premium package was a better value for every day things. At the end, though, it wasn't perfect. I ended up trading it for a Rav4 Limited for my wife and I got an FR-S. When the Rav4 was totaled, I had a chance to get a 4runner again. I liked the silver bumper covers, the wheels, and the hood scoop aesthetically. The price is much closer on a TE and an SR5 now, too. Finally, the KDSS really helps the 4Runner hustle through the mountain roads.

I might do the TRD wheels down the road, but that would be it. The TE is perfect as it sits, IMO, so that is why I went with the TE. I'd have been tempted to do the bumper covers, wheels, etc and that would have eaten into any savings. The locker and crawl control are cool to play with, but ATRAC is a pretty solid substitute for the locker and the crawl control will probably not be needed at any point. One of my best friends has an SR5 Premium in dark blue on the dark silver TRD wheels. Still an amazing looking truck.

All 4Runners are extremely capable, a LE might just scrape some plastic a bit more... It was a joke in case that didn't come through though.

Oh and a LE would be slumming it at my local mall.

You'll love it, dude. I came from an 07 Taco DCSB 4WD to a 14 Trail. I got the Trail because 4WD was not negotiable for me, and it was the only 4WD the dealer had. It's a much more refined vehicle than the Tacoma. Other than a 200 series, I wouldn't want anything else. Enjoy!!

More ground clearance and easier to lift than a KDSS truck. I'm leaving mine stock, so KDSS is great for me. If you are going a little more extreme, KDSS occasionally gets pulled.

Its a "special" color and since it was only made one year, it's extra special. (Mostly because I like it a lot) :lookout:

I pass so many modded 4Runners each day I barely pay attention cuz none wave back... But I do pass at least one guy in an Inferno on 470 every few days.
