Need some advice....

I've had my '01 limited for about 2 years, it has 199k miles. I put a new drive shaft in it last year and that's about it. Oil change, tires, and batteries are the only things that have been changed in its lifetime (I also added a MetallicA sticker on the back window). I know it's time for something to go out and would like to be proactive. I need it to last for another 100k.

If I have $1000 what should I get done? timing belt? water pump? both? Any other advice from the experts would be appreciated. Thanks.

The vehicle itself looks to be in amazing shape, but 199k miles means that it's been on the road a lot. Examine every part of the suspension components to look for wear. Bushings, ball joints, tie rods, etc etc.

You need to do some research to figure out when some things have been done.

As touched on already. Timing belt, tentioners, water pump, drive belts, should be done every 90-100k miles.

All fluids, oil, transmission, transfer case, front and rear diffs, coolant.

Spark plugs, plug wires (you will have a miss with bad wires)

Check the brakes.

Do the timing belt, t-stat and water pump right away. Don't go to the dealer unless you have no other viable option; try to find an all-Japanese shop or Toyota specialist. Absolutely use Toyota/OEM parts, especially the water pump. You will probably be best off buying an OEM belt and pump kit somewhere online but make sure it is Toyota.

Next up I would get a trans cooler $75 + $75 for install.

Finally, ditch those wheels! I know they are factory Toyota but that style looks terrible IMO. You can probably find a great set of 5-star's on CL for $250. You can leave them factory or paint them. Either way ditch the set you have now as soon as possible.

You have a very*** clean looking 4Runner (I can only see one side) for that many miles. It looks like it was taken care of well.

:hatsoff:

I agree on the TB/WP.
You might want to replace the Lower Ball Joints.
Then start lifting, etc... :)
And BTW those wheels look fine but it does help to wrap real tires around them.

i second what hepar gerdo said. and would add in there change the radiator before you become a casualty of the pink milkshake! and do the LBJs as well. i would personally do those before the TB and WP, as if the timing belt breaks nothing bad will happen other than your truck will just stall and it will need to be replaced, but no damaged will incur. but for the radiator/pink milkshake and the LBJ failing that can cause a lot of damage and in some cased total your tuck and your insurance co might not cover it, as it could be deemed lack of maintenance, and not covered.

also change out the plugs and wires, only use Denso or NGK dual electrode plugs(as specified by the owners manual or toyota) and replace the fuel filter and air filter. those things right their should not only breath new life into your rig, but also improve MPG. i would not flush your tranny, but rather do a series(5-7) of drain and fills(each drail should net about 4-5qt i believe -someone correct me if im wrong) over the period of a couple weeks with a good amount of driving in between each. that way you get almost all the fluid out of not only the pan but also the tq converter and valves in the trans. and then change out tcase and diff fluids as well. also look into a brake system flush.

if you did all that it shoud cost you not more than $1000-1200 depending on where you and if you do some of it your self, if you paid a shop to do all that you could possibly see a bill as high as $2k but your rig would be almost 100% up to date and ready for another 100k+ miles.

Yeah thats not a sport.

For ideas go through build threads

Who said it was a sport? :bluejump:

And I think he was looking for more maintenance ideas than wanting to build it up. He wants to feel confident that it will last another 100k.

yeah I fixed it, sorry.

Thanks for all the help fellas. The wife got this 4runner when it had 40k miles back in 03 and her dad is big into cars so he always made her take good care of it. I inherited it when she got a new car and my mint 188k mile 00 civic coupe was used as trade bait. I have a connection at a toyota dealership on parts and labor here in town and I'll probably start with the timing belt/water pump/thermostat.

Timing belt, water pump, thermostat, cam & crank seals, timing belt tensioner & drive belts. Should run you about $600-$650. I'd also do lower ball joints, outer tie rod ends, sway bar and steering rack bushings. $300 ish. I'd also change all the fluids sooner than later. Plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, PCV Valve and O2 sensor would all be a good idea too. Radiator and or tranny cooler would also be a good idea before you get the pink milkshake.

That said, very clean truck. Looks great for 99K let alone 199K.

Bad news.....

Driving home this weekend, the engine blew up. Starting knocking at 50 mph, the knocking slowed down or sped up with the amount of acceleration then then about a mile later, engine died, the dash board turned into a christmas tree and I coasted to a stop. Popped the hood, no leaking, no fluids, nothing. Had it towed to the dealership, they dropped the oil pan and said there were metal parts in it and told me I needed a new engine. I found a reputable guy that can put in a used 70-80k mile engine in it for $2400. My question is should I look to get a used engine or try to find one that's rebuilt?

how many additional miles did you put on your 4Runner in the past year since your initial post?

had you ever addressed the TB/WP and other maintenance issues?
