Need some advice!

Hey guys,
I'm new to the 4runner forum. I just picked up an 88 4Runner for $900 and it is in surprisingly good shape. The previous owner had ripped out all the carpet and had started chipping out the thermal insulation stuck to the floor. I'm assuming I really need this on there to reduce the heat coming from under the floor. Does anybody know where I can buy any? I'd like to put carpet back in or maybe use the rhyno liner or something. Any advice?

Nuggets Fan also man.. Hey you can find carpet on Carstuff.com, Amazon, and like 30 other sites man.. just go to google click shopping than type in 88 4runner carpet and it will pull up a bunch between $130-$300

Gets pretty damn cold without carpet in the vehicle.. Sucks

Welcome. A lot of truck owners chip off the factory stuff and paint the floor with truck bed liner. IMO it would be hot, noisy and hard to clean. Do a google search for "Peel n Seal." A lot of 4wheeler sites will have a how-to for using a butyl self stick roofing product from Lowes or Home Depot. You can use that under your carpet. It's about $12.00 a roll. You will need a roller; you can get a cheap one in the wallpaper department.

I took my carpet out because I get mine mad dirty mudding and such. I've never noticed any large amount of heat. I did recently put in some rubber diamond plate looking material for the flooring and it looks pretty good and makes things quieter.

if it's your daily driver i'd put some carpet back down for sure. in my previous vehicle i sprayed the floor with rubberized undercoating, and while it was still wet rolled out some indoor carpet padding and used a bunch of heavy objects and maginets to hold the padding down while the undercoating dried like and adhesive. then i put fresh stock carpet over the top.. it was the most comfortable and quiet flooring i've ever had.

if it's ur rig tho and you plan on getting it dirty and muddy contiantly i say just spray the underbody coating and then after it dries throw some mats down there to keep it somewhat comfortable and not like driving a rattle can.

Wow I didn't expect so many people to respond so fast! I think I definitely found the right place to talk to people and get great advice.

It is my daily driver so it might be nice to throw some carpet back in there. Car-stuff.com has some pretty good products that are pretty inexpensive.

run4yota...I think I might do what you said and just put the rhino liner in and put some mats down. If it still is too cold and uncomfortable I can alway's put the carpet back over top of it.

tire size

One more question. For a stock suspension, how big of tires can I fit under there? Can I get 31"?

31, 32 also but they may rub a little with a worn stock suspension.

Just picked up 4 32" Yokahama tires tonight for only $200 in sweet condition! I'm hoping they'll fit but I might have to modify the front to make them work. Got them home and realized the wheels that are on there are only 15" and the new tires are 16"! Guess it's back to craigslist to look for some different wheels!

Damn.. you could always go searching the junk yards here in denver.. u can pick up steel rims for I believe 13 bucks a piece.. Finding a full sets tricky expecially for 16's.. Theres a place called "Jims Toyota" Colorado blvd and I-70 area.. (303) 506-5119 decent prices on anything for toyota trucks.. 1g, 2g, and 3g parts and wheels...

Also just looked on craigslist and seen a set upp aliminum 6lug 16" for $200 obo.. off a 2000 not sure if its the same measurement..

the rim you want for those tires will be called a 16 inch 6 bolt on 5.5

The tires I got are 285/75/16. Does it matter what wheel it is as long as it's a 16" 6 bolt on 5.5? I wasn't sure if the "75" mattered at all as far as wheel size.

SjamesT4R. I'll have to check out Jims Toyota. There were a few wheels on CL too. A whole set out in Green Valley Ranch for only $100. Probably could powdercoat them or something to clean them up.
