Need Suspension Ideas

So here's the deal; I'm 16 years old and I really enjoy my t4r.:thumb3:

Only major problem I have is the suspension. Most of the bushings are dry rotted and the shocks are almost completely beat. Every bump sends a large jolt through my spine. It also has the handling of a slippery fish out of water on twisty roads. So here's the question: What affordable and comfortable suspension options are there? At the age of 16, my income isn't very large so it needs to be reasonably priced, plus Im not really looking for much of a lift, maybe from OEM - 4". So if any of you have any ideas for a new-by it would be deeply appreciated! :hello:

What exactly IS your budget? My suspension was ~$700 (Eibach/OME/Bilstein) and I consider that affordable and a good suspension. But if you can't afford that, you could always look at Rough Country (though I wouldn't recommend it) or try and salvage some stuff...

4" is a pretty decent lift on these things, so if your going for mild and not wild, I wouldn't shoot for 4" of lift. There is a boat load of lift threads, that detail which lifts are expensive/inexpensive, stiff/soft(comfortable), and how tall the lift is, as well as pictures of some lifts.

Your only in high school, so your school homework is trivial (jokingly--do your homework). When you get free time, do some homework on Bilstein 5100 shocks and in the Tacoma or Tundra variations. That is a good place to start.

For the money your best bet is going to be running Bilstein 5100s front and rear, and a spacer to lift the rear. You can get a 2.5" lift, and will have new shocks. Good idea to also replace the Steering Rack Bushings, and Sway Bar Bushings as well.

I wasnt going to go over $800, I assumed that I could get a pretty nice setup with that amount of money

Where in PA are you? Tight budgets and a lift generally don't mix. And Bilstein 5100's are definitely a huge chunk out of your budget and unnecessary. If anything, buy some stock replacement shocks for the front & rear (basic ones) and if you really want a small lift, look for some spacers. And then do important things like lower ball joints and tie rod ends.

4" is a lot of lift. Doesn't sound like much but it is. And then after you lift, your tires will look ridiculous so then you'll be spending money on tires. And then you could potentially have CV issues, more money. And then u joint issues, more money. etc, etc, etc.

I'm trying to discourage you but unless you really have the budget to do it right, you're going to wind up hating to drive your truck.

Start small now. If you like it, you could always go bigger down the line as your budget allows.

EDIT: I see you have a '99. Crawl under it and get the color codes off of the coil springs. You may already have the taller springs.
