there are a lot of folks here that are more than willing to help out in a time of need, so i know that this doesn't apply to everyone, but to a lot of you...

i don't understand why we, as a community of enthusiasts, decide to get on this thread and bash someone for posting their experience with something. many of us do not offer suggestions to improve their current situation just call them out for what may or may not be their shortcoming.

many, many people come here for help or to learn more about their vehicles. many have found inspiration to mod their trucks to become bad-ass machines. who are we to bash a new guy for not using the search function? one person could easily post a link and educate about the search function. no need to throw a "here we go again", "not again", "really?". what good does it do? let's be respectful and helpful to the new guys. let's cut a little slack. the snarky posts are really dragging this down.

fair enough, i knew because a lot of the folks on this site love those snarky, sarcastic responses.

i'm here to help where i can and use the site to resolve issues. the negative from a lot of the folks detract from the benefits of the site
 
Typically (not always) the smart A's or douches, are younger less mature adolescents. That a lot of the time have nothing else better to do for entertainment than to come on here and give someone more mature some hell.

And as many of you know that's kind of what society is going towards. Its unfortunate but the reality. On the other hand, sometimes there are people who really just need a good smart A response given to them.

I agree about the searching suggestion, again though, people have given directions and ways to search better. Google is always the best search function for this site as well.

don't take it personally. a lot of people here just helps out when they can. there are times that you don't feel like responding since it's becoming nonsense anymore at some point. get it? don't expect a resolution to your problem but sometimes you just get lucky when that person reading someone's issue are in the mood to respond.

it hasn't happened to me. i just see a lot of it. i put myself in the shoes of the new guy, who you can tell is new since he has 3 posts, and think about how it all must come across. it goes from an enthusiast site to a site with a bunch of a-holes. the excitement of a new vehicle gets rubbed off a bit when you realize that the folks that have them seem like a bunch of d-bags.

i'm part of another forum that is home to a small group of boat enthusiasts. those guys go out of their way to share information and offer encouragement and help. just a much different feel than what has become the norm around here.
 
If you think this forum is bad, you haven't seen a bad forum. The 4Runner community is so much better than the Mustang community (which I'm sure is better than the Camaro community, which is probably better than the Civic community).

Also, there are no Pathfinder/Jeep trolls that join here just to rustle feathers. Go on Mustang/Camaro forum and you see trolls all the time.

i'm not saying it's a bad forum. if you've ever searched anything and pull up pretty old threads, there is just a much different feel to the responses. i'm a pretty immature 31 year old, just ask my girlfriend, and i love sarcasm. i just don't get why we feel the need to throw the insults at folks asking honest questions.

granted, the what tire/wheel combo question is really old. we have threads dedicated to just that. instead of being dicks about it, why not just post a link to the thread?
 
It's because most of the newer members (of any forum) are lazy and want to be spoon fed every bit of information they need. It gets tiresome to see the same threads over and over and over - which causes contributing members to lose interest in the forum.

As a new member, if you are seeking information about a topic, there are certain things you should do as a common courtesy to those from whom you are seeking help:

1) Get off your ass and do your homework. Google it, use the search function, and more than likely the issue has been discussed and an answer is there waiting for you.

2) Do your best to post a reasonably intelligent question. Nobody is expecting perfection, but we should never have to read: "wazzup guyz - NE1 ever C this bumper 4 sail".

If you're going to reach out for help, have enough courtesy and respect to show that you've made some effort to resolve the problem on your own, and that you've taken the thought and time to construct a legible post.

Just my two cents. I've seen far too many forums go down the toilet because it's page after page of the same questions. Veteran members simply lose interest and move on.

I mentioned this before.. Acura forum are alot of punk kids in their 20's . Bmw x5, Half are snobs. So far, I like the jeep forum when I had a TJ, and this forum, Heck its the main reason why I sold my 3rd gen to get the 4th. Just to stay in this forum..lol

For the most part this forum is cool. My wife and I had this conversation last night. She is in the coupon forums; and mentions there are alot of bullies on the internet.
 
fullboogie, i completely agree with you, however, keep in mind that this is very likely some folks first time joining a forum. showing those folks the functionality that our forum has will help them out in the future and really unlock the power that this forum has.

for no. 2...if you post like you are texting your 16 year old friend, you have opened yourself up to whatever comes your way.
 
Perhaps we need to have a mod sticky a thread summarizing this forum's rules. Every forum I frequent has a sticky setting out the rules for posting - but this one doesn't. Seems it may help with the problem you've brought up.

There are two things that are always going to happen on forums like this.
New people are going to post questions that have been covered ad nauseam without searching for the answer first, and forum members are going to occasionally bust their balls about it. You can have all the stickies you want about posting rules/etiquette, but if they aren't going to take the time to search for an answer to their question, they sure as hell aren't going to take time to read the stickies.

I am by no means an expert, but I'm willing to help point people in the right direction if I know the answer. Lots of times, people - myself included - may not know what search terms to use to find the answer they are looking for.

I understand the frustration of seeing the same threads over and over again, but it's pretty easy to just ignore them and move on if you don't want to help out. I do agree that if a post is in a legible form folks are more likely to post a response.
 
I agree with the OP, IN PART. I have no problem answering a specific question that has been covered previously but might be difficult to locate in a search (for instance regarding a certain, piano black aftermarket steering wheel). And, yes, it disappoints me when I see a veteran member chastise somebody for asking a question about an already covered subject such as the example that I gave. Let's face it, the "search engine" on this forum is clunky crap. And from my experience, when I am in the middle of doing a heavy, intensive mod to my Runner, I do not want to spend an hour and a half trying to negotiate said search engine, for the information that I need, when I can simply ask the membership and, HOPEFULLY get a super quick response.

HOWEVER, it is extremely annoying when a new member's VERY FIRST POST is asking the membership about which suspension will not cause "rubbing" at whatever lift height or what offset for aftermarket wheels is the equivalent of Spidertrax wheel spacers. We have very comprehensive stickies covering these topics that are right there at the top and insanely obvious. I know that when I joined this forum a few years ago, I happily spent days going through stickies as well as member build threads, getting ideas and and indirect advice which answered about 94% of all my questions.

Bottom line is, be reasonable.
 
Most new members I believe stumble upon this forum simply by googling their problems. I did. Its easier to ask and get a straight answer rather than put the effort themselves. Not that its bad per se. But I do agree asking the same old questions will get you some unwanted response. You don't even need to use this forum search function. Googling will get you directly to a specific forum/problem. With that said, newbie can ask the same old questions they want. Someone will respond.

We were all new on a forum when we joined.

I would not call a noobie lazy per se. There is JUST so much info coming at you. A popular thread is AT tires, we see those at least 2-5 times a month easy. Then comes the lift question. then the what to look for in buying a 4th gen, the v6 vs v8 it goes on and on.

This happens with a popular site and popular vehicle. I think redundant threads pop up because noobies are scared the searched info is wrong or old info.

This site is quite tame compared to some others. Mini Cooper guys are even bigger douches, pardon the pun LOL
