Need Your Help With Questions

Hello,

I just ran across an opportunity to purchase a 2002 Toyota 4Runner Limited.
It has about 135,000 on it and appears to be in good condition. Two owners, last when since 2005.
What are some questions I should ask the owner and what should I look for when taking for test drive.
This would be my first one and haven't bought used in over 20 years.

I got burned on a 4runner off of CL by not checking the carfax until I had given a deposit. Also, when you first start the vehicle, make sure ALL of the lights in the dash light up. The T4R I was looking at had its engine replaced and they put in the junk yard dash to make the miles appear fewer than they actually were.
Ask for maintenance records, if the owner is the type A personality like 90% of the owners on this website, they will have everything logged.

Check underneath for rust on the frame and rear axle. Also check for any leaks in the engine bay (brake master cylinder, radiator, power steering, valve covers) and underneath (transfer case, axles, engine pan). Check the tire thread for unusual wear. Check if there is play in the steering wheel when going side to side with the steering wheel and test drive on the freeway if possible.
Put it in 4x4 if it has it to make sure its working properly. Oh and kick the tire for good measure:thumb3:

Edit: Ask if and when the timing belt and pump have been done.

Also check all fluids that are accessible (brake fluid, engine oil, transmission fluid). Any of them that look dark or burnt could show a potential issue.

The truck I just bought had dark transmission fluid. Asked him about it when I was checking it out and he told me he burnt the last transmission because of the supercharger and the new one was only 3 years old (and obviously never checked the fluid!). It'll give you clues on what might have issues soon if you don't take care of it.

One last thing, and this might be more of a 2nd Gen issue. Check the engine when it's running cold AND running hot. Not all the sensors' signals are being used by the ECU at both of those times.
