New '99 Limited: P0505 and ticking noise

I just went down to KC with a friend to help him buy a really slick '99 Limited with 138K miles. Black on Thundercloud, RR Diff Lock, really really sharp and very clean. There are two issues, and they MIGHT be related...I can't figure it out.

When the truck is cold, it throws P0505 at startup. The light will go off after a long drive....and not come back on until the next time you cold start it. I know this is a IAC issue, so my first plan is to simply take the intake apart and clean everything.

The second issue is that at idle, you can hear a tick-tick-tick that is NOT related to engine speed. As the RPM increases, you can't really hear the tick, but that's just because it's drowned out. At first I thought it sounded like lifter tick, but these have solid lifters, and then I got my ear tuned in, and I could tell that it didn't change with RPM. So I'm kind of baffled. I haven't tried to locate it with the screwdriver/stethescope method yet...but it sounds like it's in the vicinity of the driver's side valve cover.

The rig runs and drives awesome, if not for the P0505 and the tick, it would be a complete peach. Any help is appreciated!

My truck has an intermittent cold tick as well. After it's fully warmed up, it's gone. I hear it loudest right around the brake booster. No codes, no other symptoms. Going to leave it for now!

most likely the tappets or rocker arms, or you could be hearing the injectors not big deal really
they make a bit of noise when they get slightly out of adjustment and is common, i got 230K on my motor and have the slight ticking sound.

if it's the injectors making that sound that could throw a cell and they do get noisy on their way out.

i say run the injector test and see the health of those and if they are good i'd not worry about the ticking so much unless it's very very loud and constant.

yeah that's the lifters powering up most likely.

I don't think it's lifter noise. I've heard that before, and this is different. And, like the OP, it doesn't change with RPM.

Sounds like it's in the vacuum controller (black box thing on driver's side).

It's weird, it doesn't do it right away on a cold start...it starts ticking after a few minutes, then stops ticking after fully warmed up (could be several more miles down the road, depending on ambient temp). I just need to get in there and really pin-point it when it's doing it...I just haven't had the time.

Yep, pretty much exactly as you describe. Well...maybe. Do you still hear your tapping after you are driving...at higher rpm? This tapping sound we are experiencing literally becomes invisible as soon as you are above idle....you cannot hear it above idle (unless you are sitting still, revving the engine, and listening VERY closely). But at idle it is very pronounced, and seems louder when cold. It does not start ticking until about 1-2 minutes after startup though...just like yours.

I just tapped out the timing on my desk to a stopwatch, it's about 230-240 beats per minute in speed.

I think it is vacuum related, but maybe not in the brake system, so if I figure it out Qyota, I'll definitely post the fix. You do the same. :)

What you've described is exactly what I'm hearing. I'm going to say it's the same issue!

Will let you know if I find anything...

I have the same tap as well. Only when cold (first start of the day), and not proportional to rpm.

Because it wasn't related to rpm, I wasn't too worried about it. I'm curious what it is though...

non-rpm related tick is hopefully better than an rpm related tick noise

I asked my buddy who wrenches on trucks,he said to see if there is a belt tensioner going bad ??

found this just now fwiw -

I did some more research and found a tech bulletin that may help. The noise may be a bad idler pulley. Whether your engine is supercharged or not, a bad idler bearing can sometimes make noises like you describe. See the bulletin below.

REF.: 3.4L V6 SUPERCHARGER
NO.: SC001-00
DATE: AUGUST 1, 2000
MODEL: 4Runner, Tacoma, T100, and Tundra with 3.4L V6.
SUPERCHARGER DRIVE-BELT IDLER PULLEY

Due to a possible out-of-tolerance condition on the idler pulley shaft, some pulleys may have bearings that spin on the inner shaft and may cause a squeaking or rattling noise. The supercharger may be perfectly fine and the source of the noise may simply be the idler pulley

PRODUCTION EFFECTIVE:
Supercharger Assemblies with Serial Numbers from: 10481
to:10990

Noise comes from rear driver's side of engine bay - not the front. And it is a very defined "tick", not a squeak or rattle.

Remember that the valve train runs at half the crank speed so it will not be as "obvious" as something tied to the crank but yes it will climb and fall as the engine speed is increased. That said, tics are not good. We all hope its an injector which ticks according to the firing order and half the crank speed. Since you do not appear to have a rapid tap that follows the crank speed its likely an injector or a worn cam lobe with excess clearance. Find it with a long screwdriver to the ear and some patience. Most injectors are now accessible and can be listened to easily. The worn cam lobe can be traced to the side its on and then addressed when the valve cover is removed.

Can always drive it until it gets much worse and then consider a fix.

To further describe the sound - it's more of a sharp mechanical tick than a muted valvetrain click/tap. To me, it almost sounds like a relay opening and closing in fast succession. Injector noise - maybe. Worth a closer listen with a scope.

lol, i still think it's the injectors and it could be the solenoid on the charcoal canister , valve lash is also something to think about (i was thinking lifters but it's a shim and bucket design instead so same problem((more or less)) but wrong part names)

1. injector noise
2. solenoid on the canister
3. valve lash

those are my 3 in that order and i'm sticking to them, lol

Little update:

The P0505 is fixed, all it took was a thorough cleaning of the IAC. You cannot clean the IAC in a meaningful way without removing it from the throttle body, and taking the actuator off of it. Just spraying some cleaner in the opening in the TB that goes to the IAC does nothing.

So after cleaning it, I tested it, and it tested fine. Which meant it was probably good to go.....and it indeed was. No code thrown on cold startup this morning.

The ticking is still there, but I didn't have time to try and hunt it down while I had it in my garage. For now, it's just a character quirk of the truck. :)

NOTE: change your rear diff breather plugs guys! When I unscrewed the old one on this truck, I got a significant whoosh of stinky diff gas vapor. It almost shot the breather out of my hand. Surprisingly, his axle seals are still good! Those breather plugs are less than $5 at the dealer, and take all of 1 minute to replace....do it!

Hey everyone,

I have 227k on my motor and i have a related ticking noise. I just wanted to post and say that to those who hear the ticking noise up near the black brake booster canister at the rear drivers side of the engine bay, there was a thread not to long ago on here about it.

The guy (i forget who) had tried to pinpoint the noise for sometime. It only did it when it was cold, like mine, and quickly goes away and doesn't come back. He took it to the toyota dealership because no local shop could diagnose it, and the guy told them roughly that it was simply do to age, and that the part was doing its job. There really was nothing he could do the tech said so I haven't worried about it since (and, knock on wood, my trucks been fine).

Are all three of you 5 speed manual transmissions?

That should be an electric motor sound as the hydraulics for the brake booster prime up.
