New aFe Momentum GT Intake

Just ordered mine yesterday while the President's Sale was going. Got about 15% off and free 2-day shipping through aFe's website, sorry it looks like the sale is over now. I'm not holding my breath for a working hood scoop, but maybe one of us could come up with something eventually.
I'm planning on pairing it with some URD goodies as well including their Y-Pipe & 3" Mk3 Stainless exhaust, but most importantly the MAF Calibrator. I'll try to post here, but also watch my thread for info!

Got same deal installed today. So far so good. Not a rocket ship but do notice a difference. Mine did not die on initial startup like on YouTube video from original post.

I also don’t get why there is a seal to put on end of air box a large gap exists between wheel well and new air box. Large = 1/4 inch or less

interested to see your results.

I take it none of you have to worry about smogging your vehicle?

Smog/Emissions checks? Most of the places that have those aren't exactly gun friendly kind of places. Hence I try not to go anywhere near them, they don't like me there anyway! :AK47:

I didn't notice it until I saw your pictures side by side. The aFe air box and intake tube both look smaller than stock. The intake from the wheel well would be the same size unless you made it bigger. I'm no fluid dynamics engineer, but I would think that means this intake draws more vaccuum, and resultingly moves air faster through the intake tube.
The OP's comment (in the video) about feeling air drawn in from the extra port even with the plug in makes it sound like the plug doesn't actually seal the aFe airbox from the engine compartment. Hence the air flow from only the stock port in the fender wouldn't seem to be sufficient for max performance with the plug installed. I'll probably be looking for a DIY type scoop solution, even if it only draws cooler air from beneath the passenger headlight or something.

For comparison I took a look at K&N's kit. It's not even a complete box so it draws air from the engine compartment, probably more from there than the hole in the fender. Yet they promise 11.5-12.5 extra HP (@4600rpm where I barely spend any time).
The TRD Pro intake looks pretty well sealed from the engine compartment, although it doesn't look any bigger than the stock intake, it does look smoother inside, less nubs and ridges in the plastic to create turbulence. It also is missing the resonators of the OEM intake, although oddly the aFe has one.

So why would anyone choose this over the TRD intake or even stock (which is already a cold air intake)?

Smaller chamber and piping would equate to it reaching its greatest level of vacuum sooner. The level it reaches though depends on the engine. So as long as neither stock of AFE leaked and stock wasn't so large that the engine's efficiency couldn't adequately pump the space, both should reach essentially the same vacuum. I believe this is why most people notice or mention less throttle lag or that it feels like it rev's with less effort.

Pretty sure the air he feels from video is from port that is directed to the wheel well since it is not a perfect seal. Also noticed my mpg is higher now not huge but prob around .5-1 mpg. Guess I’m not too aggressive on the pedal because I haven’t noticed my mileage being all over the place either. Slight increase in mpg and better power so far.

Was playing with it again this morning. That plug is not a great seal. It fits and does not move, but nowhere near air tight. There is air moving around it. I kinda think its purpose might be noise suppression.

Soooooo..... Funny you mention this. I had a minor panic attack yesterday. I needed to get my 4Runner inspected to complete Texas registration renewal. While I was on the website I noticed Texas had a specific FAQ about intakes. Apparently Texas is a CARB state. :(

Decided to take it in anyway. Passed without question.

According to Texas' website the inspector should look for a CARB sticker, I think in practice they let the electronic diagnostic tell them if the whole system is working properly. Which would be the more reasonable thing to do.

Really happy I did not have to swap my intake for a 10 min errand.

I managed to get mine installed yesterday, write-up here. Really wasn't all that difficult, I didn't even have to remove the radiator cover! While the tube and box is all smaller than OEM, it's still bigger than the throttle body diameter.

EDIT: I did order my URD Exhaust and MAF Calibrator. Shortly thereafter, Gadget emailed me and said he didn't yet have the aFe MomentumGT intake mapped yet, but he does have a truck coming in soon for testing and mapping. I'll keep you guys posted on it.

Bummer about TX technically being a CARB state, although at least folk in TX are more practical than Cali. As long as there's some dirt in the engine compartment, I bet you could get away with a "sticker fell off off-roading" excuse if they ask about it. With all the lifted and modded trucks running around that state, I seriously doubt the "required" CARB label would be enforced.

Fellas, I'm a dealer for AFE and I can get you guys this intake.

BUT, I've also been working with S&B and they are coming out with their intake in a few weeks and it looks really promising and will be a lower price point. S&B is all made in house in CA, and they do great work and flow test everything and have a full report on every intake compared to stock. It's pretty cool. I'll try to get the data.

EDIT, UPDATE, the S&B is now done, and under $300.

New S&B intake at Burtman Industries, order link, etc
