I think ditching the frame for a unibody design with 4 wheel independent suspension, all wheel drive, and a cvt transmission would be a huge step towards reducing weight and improving fuel mileage while providing a sporty ride with a quieter interior.

Why not build a more work/trail oriented 'Runner with fewer frills? Vinyl on the floors, cheap seats, just give owners a bare-bones platform from which to build something that they won't mind getting seriously dirty from time to time.

Yeah. For my serious post, I'll say the only 2 things I'd really like to see is 1) some nice sized hidden, lockable compartments in the back for stuff like basic emergency gear, recovery straps, bungee cords, first aid kits, etc. And 2) ventilated seats option with the SofTex seats - they are hot in the summer and do not breathe one bit.

This is something that they do with the Tacoma and that they should do with the 4Runner. Jeep does it with the sport trim. It's pretty no frills that starts at $23k for the manual and $25k for automatic. Toyota doesn't even have to put a manual in it and I'd still be interested. One reason I would never buy a new vehicle and turn it into a trail rig is because of all the unecessary accessories and electronics. I don't need a 7 in. infotainment system or whatever else. If they made a trim level like this it would have to be close to the Wrangler sport automatic in pricing. Things I'd like to see in it would be a no frills radio and dashboard, transfer case lever like the trail, and like the poster said above cheaper fabrics and rubber floor, lockers can be added later especially at a lower price point.

JK, to each their own, personally I prefer to strip away features rather than add on new ones. Which is why I will probably never buy another new car.

Anyone consider there is no 6th gen Runner coming ? As far as I can tell there's no leaked word from Toyota, there's no test mule caught on camera yet. I see sales have been increasing but is it possible Toyota is killing the model ?

I can't stand the interiors of the newer 4Runners. I personally hated the 4th gen, and I was so excited to see the 5th gen come out. Everything looked pretty good on the outside, and then I got inside one and was just so let down. There's just so much craptacular plastic in a $40k car. My 97 Limited's dash and trim are so much more solid than that crap.
I'd buy a next gen if they figured that out and maybe toned down the body flares a bit. It's not going to happen, but who the heck knows!
